Update - need help. Hooked up gas tank/battery... key won't do anything. I can hear the click when I turn it over but that's it.
Try and jump from the solenoid but the negtive terminal gets hot immediately and starts smoking.
retighten everything and look for shorts make sure all grounds being used are grounded - try again and the battery turns at the right speed for about a second the engine turns slower and slower til its sounds like the battery is completley drained.
I bought a new solenoid and same thing. nothing at the key and the motor just doesn't want to turn.
i haven't mounted the alternator yet I can't figure out how to get it in right.
what the hell is going on?

Heres the modified ford alternator bracket so that a gm one wire alt can be used. I had to file the adjusment slot a bit so the alt would slide freely. Also had to make a spacer thats slides over the lower alt bolt since the mount on the two alts is different from one another, i just used some small thin wall pipe and two washers. Can you make me a video or take some more pics? I understand the concept but I just can't seem to make it fit right. Hoping I can just copy off you to make it work

Very well could be but sounds like you have a wire crossed.

Very well could be but sounds like you have a wire crossed. I put the battery back in my car for school. Came back and put it in the derby car and it was trying to start over (assuming the alternator it my other car charged it) I searched for any wires that look burnt or anything... couldn't find anything. I looked at all connections to make sure they weren't exposing touching metal. Well I made the alternator bracket, still have to hook it up. But by the time I tried to test to make sure the alt belt was spinning good the battery was bogging down.. So I'm gonna go out tomorrow and put power to the alt and see what happens. Anything I'm doing wrong? [b

Anyone have a diagram for the 302 solenoid? Constant power, alternator, and all wiring needing to be constant on the one post, starter wire on the other.

That's how it is hooked up. But I got the 1 wire mounted I just need to put power to it. I'm gonna try and find a bigger battery and see what happens. I think it's a combination of too small of a battery and no alt.... and if I can just get it to start and hole a charge then I can start weeding out wires one by one doing the start and cut technique. (So if there is a short or cross wire I'll either run into it or cut it out)

[b you don't need the alt. to crank the motor,,, your wires are smoking because your starter is drawing to many amps.... put another starter in it,,,, work from there,,, oh,, one more thing,,,, did this motor run ? ya sure it isn't seized ? Ice in the cylinders ? can you turn it by hand,, ? ...........................lenny

Lenny - yes ran the car last year, it sat over the winter, no I haven't tried to turn by hand. I should probably get a starter tester and try to turn by hand before I go spend any money.

also to note that the stand alone solenoid needs to be grounded at it's base. other than that I agree with Jugulator.

I said that wrong, I went to Advanced and was talking to them and they said if I do decide to pull the starter, they have a tester for it.
