On cadillac engines I'd get a HEI based on location of distributor. Silicone spray seemed to help me. Points are far more susceptible to having problems if they get any amount of water on them. Hmmm, I didn't know anything could be worse than HEI for water. My F250 in my sig has a 460 with an HEI and I have to keep a Wal-Mart sack over it because of water issues. Now I've never tried points in it, but I would have thought they would have been a little more water resistant

Personally I've just had better luck sealing them up. I haven't had problems since I started running a bead of RTV on the bottom of the cap and on the coil cover, spraying down inside with silicone spray.

I agree they all suffer if they get wet and definitely all motors with front mount distributors have water as a weakness. In the mud truck as soon as I switched from duraspark to HEI (its a Mallory), I immediately began having issues with water.
For derby applications, I think all distributors regardless of front or rear mount benefit from being waterproofed with RTV and silicone spray.

I have always run hei ignitions and never had a problem with water. Before every derby I spray inside and outside of cap with wd40 and tape the cap down with electrical tape. Kind of a ritual.

The points were smoked, I got my hands on the electronic pick up kit, runs good, need to do a little work on the carb. Does anyone by chance know the size fan belt you need to go from the crank to the water pump pulley?

Cut an old belt. Install it holding it together with a small hose clamp. Then take to parts store and match it up.

Thanks again for all yours guys' help. If you have a 74 cad 472, with AC and stock pulleys, you need a 33 1/2in v belt to bypass using the smog pump 34in works but it's loose

So with some work on a 472, you can use a 33in belt to bypass the air pump, and a 48in belt to bypass the AC pump and still have power steering

Any tips to running headers on the 425 engines in a stock 79 caddy? I’m cutting the bracing out and raising the engine mounts. Just wondering what to do about steering and brakes.
