I ran a 400 poncho this year. Boiled out all my water and it was still screaming. I made a really hard hit on the front and it killed it. I had everything running off of a master switch so I couldn't kill the fuel pump and it flooded. I kinked the hose and finally got it going after one minute and fifteen seconds so I got the black flag. I'll be running them again, except im setting the idle at 2k so it cant die I would be careful about setting our idle that high if you were serious. I have overheated a lot of engines that way before the derby started trying to get by running junk.

I'm really not worried about the heat. Pontiacs are cold blooded, and the hotter they get the better they run, within reason of course. this particular motor was ran by a friend 8 years ago and he had the heads glowing orange and it melted the plugwires off the head. he parked the car in the weeds and it sat there until I asked if I could try running that motor this year. changed the oil replaced the plug wires and it fired right up. I'll definitely run it again, and I have 2 more built in case that one bights the dust

There are 3 different BB Lac oil pan setups. Front sumps for RWD 472 & 500's, 3/4 Rear sumps for the 425 and 368 as well as a full rear for the Eldos. Pans should swap up, just need to swap pickups as well.
I wouldn't hesitate to run a 425 or 472 with a timing gear change if I couldn't sell it for a fair price.

Does anybody have a technique for keeping the crossmember from braking the starter on the 472/500? Most of the shows I run dont allow cradles so the motor mounts are welded down in stock location. I'm thinking about bending the idler arm.

I'm thinking about bending the idler arm. Really havent seen it ever being a problem, until WELL into the run. Thats just where they like to suck in. Get "creative" with your idler arm bolts and it will help it. If you have a ? about it feel free to PM me cowdoc.

Thanks Goines2, I cant run solid suspension and what has happened twice as near as I can tell is the centerlink hits the bottom of the starter motor when the suspension gets stressed from a big hit or something. I cant think of what else could have caused it. I think I'll bend the idler down for more clearance and maybe see about a ministarter? if there is such a thing. I guess I could also raise the engine but it's welded in.

Has anyone tried a running a Buick motor? It was in a 1980 Buick Electra. I have only ran Chevy 305 and 350, but wasn't sure how well these hold up.

Late response but are you sure it's a Buick motor? This car was built in the era of corporate motors.

I have ran a Buick 455, out of a 1971 Electra Custom. It has been in 5 derbies, 11 heats, has lost the radiator in all heats except 1. Unbelievable torque on stock gears and 390's. I will be using it in my next build. All I did was gasket set, plugs, wires, rebuilt carb, set carb to run on 4 barrel all the time, and set timing.

What transmissions will bolt to a Cadillac 472? What are everyone's preferences? Thanks

The Caddy motor uses the BOP bellhousing, most everyone runs a th400.

500's all day. Love the torque. A good tune-up and headers goes a long way on these motors. Advance the timing just a little, they can be a beast. They'll scream till they melt if you set it up right. I'm having a 500 overhauled for the coming year. I wanna see what they can do all fresh.
