I think a 20 dollar timing chain is a must on any old stock motor. JMO

You don't need headers, although they are a definite plus for heat removal. But you definitely need a good carburetor, plugs, wires, battery, starter, battery cables, radiator, and a good fan with shroud to cool that big bastard.

Your spot on with the dieseling on an olds. I ran a 455 for a couple years, great motor. I actually got yelled at for not shutting down when I was out of a heat cause it wouldn't shut off lol...

ran a 71 olds delta 88 last yr with the factory 455 stock carb and exhaust mans wit just enuf pipe to clear tranny and got 4th in the mains after a heat and a semi only stalled once whole time and I shut it off at the end (drive shaft pulled out i'm buying a slider) and this wuz a full weld show wit imps. 455 not a big rev motor at all but gobs of torque stock gears and I let them dodge guys know I wuz there. motor is coming out getting DECs (so I can hear mine wen battling piped 440s) an edelbrock off road carb and going into my 76 olds 88 2door for 2015

I've heard rumors of guys using 350 diesel bottom end.. Any truth to this? Can you build a decent engine w diesel bottom end? How does it hold up?

Not just a stock Oldsmobile bottom end. The pistons in the diesel oldsmobile will raise the compression too high. I don't recall at the moment if the crank and rods are reusable on a gas build, but the block definitely is. They are better than the other blocks from the same period due to non windowed main webs.

Ran a 425 on alky and 93 both. Was an animal and I wouldn't be afraid to run another again. It eventually got hot on 93 and kept shutting down. Shame the alky carb was screwed up cause if it was on for its last show its prolly be around still. I ran 350 gears and 29" tall 700's it had 0 trouble moving the car around. It met its dooms free it jumped time. Pulled it apart to see what was up and the cam and crank and rods were the prettiest blue color lol

I heard that the 425 pans will interchange with the 472/500s ect. I read that the 425 pan would need a little bit if modding because the throw on a 500 crank would cause it to hit. Can you imagine a high comp big block in newer style metric? Easy as hell conversion considering the pan and oil pump and the manifolds are available at the junkyard.

Opinion on what carb to run on the 500 ?! Specific plugs or wires ? Any other small tweaks as well. Thanks guys

My understanding is 425 pan won't fit. eBay will have cheap deals.

From what I understand. Every V8 Cadillac oil pan will fit every other V8 Cadillac engine from 68 to 84 with the exception of the 4100. On some pan swaps, you will have to swap the oil pump pick up tube also. Maybe the 500 is different. IDK?

I ran a 400 poncho this year. Boiled out all my water and it was still screaming. I made a really hard hit on the front and it killed it. I had everything running off of a master switch so I couldn't kill the fuel pump and it flooded. I kinked the hose and finally got it going after one minute and fifteen seconds so I got the black flag. I'll be running them again, except im setting the idle at 2k so it cant die
