I've ran over 50 Cadillacs over the years and always use a 472 or 500. I've won a lot of money with them and they usually came with the car. Nowadays we pull the motor out of fresh cars no matter what and put in our Cadillac motors. We fabbed up d/ps to bolt to the front of the block and have never lost a distributor when we have that on. Only other thing we do is swap to a holley 2 barrel, advance the timing a bit, run about a quart of Power Punch with 10-40 oil, and put headers on. Usually I will go a whole derby without the engine dying at all. I remember once 10 or 12 years ago, having a hole poked in the oil pan and losing my radiator in a 69 caddy and that thing still went another 8 minutes and ended up 2nd to an imperial. We also fabbed an oil pan so we can fit the old 472/500s into metric caddys. Talk about fun to drive, those newer lighter models with the big old motors can really fly around the arena. Sometimes you have to get creative with the driver's side stacks tho. A couple times I've had to run stock exhaust on just the drivers side because the steering gets in the way on the metrics.

Just got a Pontiac 400 gunna drop a hei in it what's y'all opinion on the stock exhaust that raps around the starter is it ok or what really don't want make some headers seeing that I would have to make such a sharp turn Some Pontiac 400's came from the factory with HEI.If you can get a set of headers made it would help or exaust manifolds.400 Pontiacs are a good engine if you can keep the radiator from getting hurt. They tend to run a bit hotter than a chevy engine from my experience of them tho. Yaa I know the 400 in the later 70s had hei If I had more time I would sell it and buy me a 350 but it's just in a stock class so I'm just gunna run it seeing that I all ready have a car I'm running at the same derby in the modified class

You notice when you put a 2bbl on it the throttle almost becomes a light switch? Lots of fun. Run great hot but can sometimes eat starters if you ever do have to crank when hot.

Definitely fun. I have noticed the starters burning out if you have to turn it over a lot. We started running a 2nd battery box with 2 more batteries when legal and an ether tube. If it starts turning slower, I switch to the other box and shoot some fluid at it.

I used a Wehrs Machine carb adapter and DEC headers.

DEC headers or your local muffler shop if you can get them to. DEC, straight out of the box, have always fit perfect so its worth paying a little extra. I've ordered from cheaper sites and you can tell they don't always test fit them 1st. I have had to hammer pipes or bore out holes from a couple other places. We bought a universal carb adapter from O'reilly's years ago. I've only used 1 425 and I think we had to cut our own steel spacer/gasket to go under the adaptor because it left a small gap.

I'm going to be running a stock 472 in a 74 caddy in a limited weld derby. The motor has a points distributor, can I run 12volts to the coil, or do I need to run the resistor wire? Also, to the guys who run holly carbs, do you run stock ones with off road kits? how do you have them set up? I have a couple from racing I could use, or ill stick with the q-jet which I have had good luck with on my motors.

As far as the carb; use what you know. Quadrajets are great carbs imo. But for a derby I'd throw a motor craft 2 barrel on it. They just work good together. I'd also invest in a starter, timing chain and gaskets (only if needed). But honestly if you would rather have a sbc I'd trade ya! Got a couple solid engines.

Get an HEI and run whatever carburetor you know how to make run properly. A q jet, holley, eldelbrock, rochester, whatever doesn't matter if not tuned properly. Any of them set up right will work fine.

I run points in all of my engines and do not have any kind of resistor, you will just need to change the points once a year or so.

run a resistor if you run an alternator though because 14 volts will kill the points or rotor, they seem to be ok with 12 volts usually

I don't have to worry about burning up the coil?

On cadillac engines I'd get a HEI based on location of distributor. Silicone spray seemed to help me. Points are far more susceptible to having problems if they get any amount of water on them.

I've never had a problem with coils. I've actually never had a problem with the points themselves wearing either, but out of precaution I change them beginning of the season no matter what and reset my dwell.
