get rid of the charcoal canister and plug the hole where it goes to the back of the intake. the dash also supports the steering column if you do remove it put a dash bar in and bolt or chain the column in place

That's fine with the dash out if you want the alt to charge though the connector that comes off the alt take the yellow and light green/red and connect them to the batteries output instead it will charge that way

I pulled the gauges and saw the post about the Alt not charging the battery. I have a question about the wiring fix. I saw this diagram from earlier:http://oldfuelinjection.com/public/alternator/3G-ALT_wiring.gif
Am I taking the Y/W & LG/R off of terminals "A" and "I" and connecting them to "S", or am I leaving them on their terminals, and cutting them and looping them to "S" and does it matter which "S" terminal I loop them to. Or, is there a third correct way of doing this? Sorry...I'm used to older cars with easier wiring. My 96 Merc is a nightmare. Thanks for your help.

Just cut the wires long enough and put them on the alt output it works. Just ran my 95 merc not long ago no issues as far as electrical went but my car shut off went to restart it and the starter wire got disconnected that goes to the battery. Shame but didn't matter cause I lost my throttle cable too so it didn't help any. If I were you make sure to reroute the throttle cable in a different path or make sure it doesn't come undone. Car folded at the crush boxes and I was driving it with the frame on the ground for awhile before I lost my cable. I didn't get a chance to dimple it as theback wwasn't in great shape but it went up nicely.
