This isn't about header wrap, but i just put 4 into 1 headers on my completely stock 350 and now its popping right on start up and then every once awhile idling and backfires when i rev it. I know with quads you have to rejet, is this the same? If so does anyone know what size jets i should use?
Also i see people talk about timing it to run hot. So it starts up easily when hot. Does this have to do with just turning the dist cap?

Just a guess, but maybe you have a bad gasket or the bolts are not tightened right?

Just a guess, but maybe you have a bad gasket or the bolts are not tightened right? Steve I double checked the bolts and all the gaskets are brand new fel pro gaskets. Its still doing it. Couldnt it just be runnning really lean since there is no back pressure now. I cant find anything online about rejetting it or whatever. I know thats what you do with quads, but i dont want to tKe this carb off if i will be absolutely lost. Could the vaccume lines possibly have anything to do with it? Some are not plugged in to anything and really change the way it idles when i plug them but it still pops when i rev it. It never popped when i had the stock pipes on it. Thanks steve.

Not real good with carbs either. But yes, plug off all the vaccume holes on the carb and engine, if not being used.

I didnt have any luck plugging the vacuum lines or turning the distributer. I dont think its the carb because this only happened when i put the new headers on. Does anyone put something in the headers to give it back pressure?

your sucking air. gasket leak, take your headers off and make sure the flanges are flat, put some orange rtv on.

your sucking air. gasket leak, take your headers off and make sure the flanges are flat, put some orange rtv on. I got some of the ultra high temp rtv and put it on and followed the directions. Didn't solve the problem. When i was feeling around for leaks i noticed on the side thats popping, the front two headers were NOT hot and the rear two were hot. So i moved those plugs to the opposite side of the engine to decide if it was the plugs or the wires. When i moved the plugs, the same side still popped. So then i bought all new wires. Still popping. I switched the two wires to see if i mixed them up by accident and that made it worse so the firing order is correct. Could the distributer be bad on just those two wires? I don't know what i did wrong by just changing headers.

try changing the cap, look at the old one for corrosion or if it looks likes you drew a line in it with a pencil. possible cam lobe wore?
