Exactly. They are one part of the whole package.

I scanned through the thread and didn't see anything about my question. I have a 9 inch with 5.83 to 1 and can't seem to get the lash down to where it needs to be without the ring gear hitting the rear pinion bearing support. I know that the case tends to break there so I don't want to grind it down to clear. So would it be ok to grind the ring gear or is there something else I'm missing. Oh and I remove the shims from the pinion support.

I had the gears in a welded carrier and changed to a full spool. I didn't measure the lash but I would guess 15 to 20 thou. Its way to much. I'm guessing a new crush sleeve is needed.

Not a ford rear person,so I wanted to ask..I haven’t looked into this at all, just curious...so a car 9 inch sits on top of the leafs, and a truck/bronco sits under the leafs..can the center section be turned 180degrees for the truck rear to sit on top of the leafs, without having to cut the leaf perches off?

Nope, if you flip the center section 180, you are changing the direction of rotation. Meaning, you'll have 3 or 4 reverse gears and one drive gear because they will switch.

Was thinking after I posted, don’t think the ring gear would clear the back of the housing,as I don’t think it’s molded outward on both sides....klicky96,it wouldn’t necessarily swap the way it rotates, because it would basically be the housing getting rotated, the gears would still sit like they was before...not sure I’m makin any sense...but I don’t think it would work cuz of ring gear clearance...I’m just gonna cut the leaf perches off,and move em to the bottom of the rear

But, you won't have clearance to flip the housing itself.

Anyone running the same rear end for multiple builds? What width axle do you use and have you ran into any problems using the same axle on a full frame car vs maybe a mid size?

My knowledge is that all Big Block cars after 1964 used the 31 spline.
I could be wrong, but that's my understanding.

Are you going to keep it 28 spline or convert it to 31 spline?

I've heard of people pulling the carrier and shafts out of the explorer 8.8s to build 31 spline car 8.8s. I've never done it myself.
If you are keeping it "stock" I'd probably go with Yukon shafts, they are kinda expensive, but I've ran them in the offroad world and they are considerably stronger than factory castings.

What rear would come stock in a 72 continental? Car had a 460/c6 originally
