Be more careful. I've ran so many stock 8.8s in anything from my full weld cars, trucks, and even ran one in my 5 foot car. There's nothing wrong with them, just stop letting people hit you with the tires spinning and don't run super heavy tires. If you really need to beef it up, you can build a stout 8.8 with little effort.

think you would have similar results, 8" rears come with 25 spline axles if I'm not mistaken... You are mistaken. They are 28 spline. 8" and 9" axles are interchangeable (given they are the same spline/length). 👍

I know why i keep breaking them, I run a 23-8.50-14 foam filled skid loader on that corner. went that route when I started to destroy a tire every run. I can run stock axles no bracing and last time I checked moser axles were out of the question. This last one broke after I made a hard hit and when the truck landed again that was it. I never saw anyone hit me in that corner since I last replaced the axle. have been trying to find out what there is for a stock axle that will be narrow enough for my rangers and explorers that may hold up for a few runs anyway. If the 8&9" aren't any better then I may check into seeing if I can get some mosers. so far I have been able to pull used axles out of rears that I have laying around, and I think I used my last spare when I fixed it last edit: and careful really isnt in my vocabulary when I get behind the wheel. I go out with a plan and someone always lays a good hit on me and the plan goes out the window and its game on.

I know that feeling lol you try to go out and take your time, but that goes out the window and the tunnel vision starts. Your not going to gain much of anything with a stock 9" or 8". You can build a hybrid 8.8 with explorer 31 spline axles. It'll be stronger than the stock 8.8, but I doubt you'll find anything strong enough for those tires. If you're going to continue running foam filled tires, you're going to need a stout rear end. If you can't upgrade to a quality axle and whatnot, you shouldn't run those tires because you'll have the same outcome everytime.

I have an explorer in the shop to build for next year that is supposed to have the 31 spline shafts, hopefully it has the 3.73 ratio that I am looking for.

I realize changing the spline isnt going to solve my problem, but I was hoping with the larger spline they would put a bigger axle bearing in the axle. still going to build it until I get another 28 spline axle to put in it.
and I only break them every other time or so lately so if my luck keeps up I will have to live with it.
The rim is only a stock 5 spoke s10 rim, not sure why it hasn't bent at all yet

Might be a dumb question mn13 but do you run the backing plate and hub on your rear end?

Might be a dumb question mn13 but do you run the backing plate and hub on your rear end? yeah, this one still has drum breaks. from watching the video and from what I remember looking out the driver window and watching the wheel tip over I think this was fatigue. When it fell off I had just given a pretty good shot with the front end and the truck bounced. www.youtube.com/watch?v=sjiuPMdOchQ this is not my video but you can get an idea when it broke at the 8:40 ish mark #13 by the way

Well that throws out what i was thinkn then. I know some guys around here that arent allowed to run axle savers usually run the backing plate and hubs and get by fine with it.

Your problem still lies within the wheel setup. Until you change youre setup, whether it be the axles or the wheels, you'll keep breaking them.

just some info that may help somobody-Got a 9" from a mid 70s bronco, unbolted one axle, pulled it partway out and it had a thick axle so I figured 31 spline. When I went to build it I found out it is a 28, they really tapered the spline end down so I spent a couple hundred on a pos lol.

Is the rear you have out of a shoebox bronco?

They prevent your axle flange from bending much or at all. They butt up to axle flange to accomplish this. They are typically bolted to a braced rear end. The rear end will probably need to be braced to run them since the axle savers transfer the force that is applied to axle flange to rear end housing/bracing. I don't think it would be particularly hard to build your own if you wanted to spend the time.
