everybody says throw away the 302.. but back in the day I have had some pretty hot mustangs good set of heads good intake cam etc... with a good gear in the car I don't see why it wouldn't turn on plus run cooler than a sbc?? I run a stock 302 and love it. Also love that nobody else really runs then so you can pick them up for cheap.

how does it hold up power wise and on the torque end? all of my 302s have always ran cooler than my sbc's.. I was thinking I already have a good low mileage 302 why not get some good heads a good cam intake and carb and roll out.. aod trans im unsure of has the 8:8 rear end. I was going to do the c clip eliminators and a good gear

Dont bother with spending money on the 8.8, spend that money on building a 10 bolt. Even with C-Clip eliminators a buddy of mine has snapped 3 axles in 1 year.

my motor is a 302 stock bottom end with 289 heads with a 49cc combustion chamber and a cam that is only described as f'n nasty. roller rockers, and solid lifters. been impressed, handles heat well. I think have a to much cam, she lopes and doesn't idle real well till shes good and hot. not ideal for a derby motor. if I get a little extra cash might cam down this winter.

My brother and i have always built ford engines. 302 and 351w. I ran a boss 302 in my derby cars for a while. Thats a 302 i bored .060 over and had 351 cleveland 4 barrel heads with the biggest valves you could put in it. Cam was rediculous big, had .630 lift and sounded like it was going to die at 1,200 rps because of the lope. Ran long enough to win a lot. Had a 750 holley 4 barrel on it. Ran 5.00 gears and 7.00 mud tires. Never an issue with needing torq.
Now i have a 302 with windsor sr heads 14:3 compression, .236 and .248 duration at .050 roller cam, victor intake, 750 holley dp, 4340 crank and rods, no issues at all with heat. Use 4.86 gears so torq is no issue at all with 28” tires. Works good
Brother has 86 up roller engine stock with an hei dist and 4 barrell aluminum intake with 650 dp carb. The other is small cam windsor sr heads, roller rockers, stock block, dual plane 4 barrel intake, hei, 650 holley dp. No torq issue at all and no heat issues. Both set ups are 5.00 gears and zero toq issues.
One thing you need to remember is that you are not building a chevy. A ford is nothing like a chevy.

Why are you wanting to go to a 1.73 on a sbf? All this does is make the cam have more lift. Thats it. Does nothing for duration. Not to mention the work of checking every rocker to make sure it clears and doesnt bind or hit. Then grinding to clear each push rod hole in the head.

Any recommendations on a mini high torque starter for a 302? In the market for a new one after I melted the terminals off my last one.

Any recommendations on a mini high torque starter for a 302? In the market for a new one after I melted the terminals off my last one. Look up db electrical.iv had real good luck with their starters, the chevy style solenoid ford starters are the ones to get. They are a factory designed high torque mini style.
