Back in my newbie days, I used a light switch for my fuel pump, I put it on before the derby, pull in the ring, and notice no fuel was pumping. I had both my negatives and positive wires for fuel pump going to the switch.

My first derby i had ran a pre-ran car that i had bought. Anyway i reused all of his wiring that didn't have fuses, and was ran every which way. I burnt my fan wire on the header and thought i caught on fire. Pulled flag like a panzy. In the consolation i took a side hit and my car ran for about 1 more minute. Then just died while i was trying to spin around. No start. Pump was pumping car was cranking. I get home the next day and spray some ether in the carb to have it pop right off. I get to tracing my fuel line back, and found when i took the side hit, my battery box jumped onto my fuel line and pinched it, hit the switch moved the battery, the pump whirred up then bogged after it filled the carb, hit the starter and she took right off... Note to self, FUSES AND STEEL FUEL LINE!!!

i dont think id ever run fuses, but all wiring should be routed really well. I like to put it inside fuel line or something and fuel line is just as crucial when routing, and make sure everything will stay away from the headers.

First derby, rust flakes in the bottom of the old fuel cell I was using clogged the fuel filter and the elbow coming off the bottom of the tank. Car would run for a little while and then die until it clogged enough that it wouldn't even start.

Note to self, FUSES AND STEEL FUEL LINE!!! I would never run any fuses in my cars. What you gonna do if 1 blows your screwed. With or without electric fuel pump, fan or alternator. Simplicity and Functionality is all you need.

I would at least run a fuse for the fan. If it normally would have a 20A fuse I could see putting in a 25-30A fuse but if it is drawing more amperage than that... its not working anyway. So you might as well break it off from your electrical system and have one less thing drawing power.

I backed over someone else's loose wheel and tire that had found its way into the middle of the track and got high centered on it. Still mad at myself over that one. My dad sort of did something like that, except it was down to him and another car. He popped a tire, it came off the rim, and he ran it over and got stuck. Had the derby wrapped up too.

I ran around 3 or 4 shows with a motor that always died when I made a hit. I could run the absolute piss out of it at home, but it would die everytime I ran it. Cost me one two derbies.... Rusty boat tank...

Bought a cradle for my 2.3, bolted the starter on but the cradle kicked it sideways just enough where I couldn't really tell, pulled onto the track at Sturgis, promotor made me shut it off so some guy could propose to his girlfriend and it wouldn't start again... one of the biggest derbys in America and I got a very expensive front row seat.

Either me or my dad who was riding shotgun bumped into the fuel pump switch and turned it off. No big deal, but after trying to start it back up multiple times I realized the car had to be in park to start. I started it up, crowd goes nuts. As I'm driving across the track I quickly find out that my cv shaft broke after being hit as I was a sitting duck for awhile. I got insanely lucky as one of the 2 other cars that were still running stopped. I made 2 more hits and it was over. Got 2nd place and $150.

this thread makes me feel less stupid. brother was driving and I rode with him in a wire class. he made an awkward hit in a really rusty car and the front kinda blew up. he backed off and the car died. It wouldnt turn over, I messed with battery, checked switches. we were hauled back into pits and my dad puts the column shifter into park (we had a floor shifter) car started right up. neutral switch... had a few cold ones over that and we laugh about it now.

Loose positive cable to starter, and killed battery beyond charge, <-- found that out after it was on charger and ran car and died after 5 minutes of run time when carb loaded up. So now with the same car I have a new battery and getting amother carb rebuilt and installed. Hopefully killing this car once and for all.

First car ever, had an old school floor mount shifter with park lockout. Was down to 4 cars and I pile drived a car into the berm. Floor and frame bent just enough that I couldn't get into reverse to back away, and I got third.
Running a stock clutch fan the hood got into it and smoked the belt. Cost me a win when the car got so hot it wouldn't run. Let it cool off and it started right up.
Another time I had my switches mounted too close to my hip and smashed the ignition switch when I got hit hard sideways.
That's most of my dumb mistakes. But it was all little stuff that could have been prevented. Live and learn.
