Mine would be this year at a local show. Had a bunch of buddies running together in a one shot deal. On the suicide hit I got under the car behind me and tried pushing him into barriers, he turned and got off my trunk then a car I built came across track and put me on the wall. Back bumper was hung on barrier by 3" literally and tires just off the ground. And there I sat with a front row seat 30 seconds into the heat
Lesson learned is stay away from the walls

First time ever in a derby. I still had the shifter on the column and key ignition. My car died and I tried to refire it. But it wouldn't turn over. My passenger checked the battery cables they were still on. So I couldn't figure it out. About 30 seconds after I broke my stick I realized it was still in gear. I put it in park and then it fired right up lol. I laugh about it to this day

I backed over someone else's loose wheel and tire that had found its way into the middle of the track and got high centered on it. Still mad at myself over that one.

I once grabbed the steering wheel with my left hand to pull myself over to mess with my batteries with my head down. Took a passenger's door shot and immediately thought to myself that was dumb as my hand and arm were caught in the steering wheel. Dislocated wrist, double compound fracture, and $72,000 in medical bills later I learned to not put my hand inside the steering wheel.

Yep. Felt like a fool. Running 2nd, had a slim shot but ran out. Put gas in and drove it on the trailer. Another time I ran out in the heat because I forgot to top off.
Regarding that steering wheel thing, always tape that sucker up so nothing can get in there. 3 good friends in 3 years at our local show with major fractures due to the hand/arm/thumbs getting in there. Here comes the wheel shot and twists that sucker like a pretzel. Safety first.

On s10, had neg wire for gas tank break, didn't notice until after heat was done, connected wire back up and drove away, 87 1 ton Chevy, had the clutch rod come out, didn't know it, thought it was the clutch, pushed it back in the next day was good as new. Same truck but changed motor and tranny and slider driveshaft. It was a day and night show. In the day show my air cleaner snapped off and I seen liquid, broke my stick, it was water from my rad. Night show Made one hit, drive shaft pulled apart hit the frame snapped tranny, torque convertor, and piece of the engine off. Same truck, different tranny, didn't add enough fluid, burnt up $700 tranny. Backed onto the wall all by myself before.

Back when I ran compacts too I had a merc wagon fwd, it was a local show and I took the merc and two fullsize cars. I used my "good" gas tanks in my fullsize and forgot to acquire one for the merc prior to the show. Literally showed up at the show with a 5 gallon gas can with the line just stuck through the open cap. Without time to change tanks I just ratchet strapped the gas can in and duct taped the hose in. (Real smart and safe back in my teen years). I went out and won my heat, no time to change tanks still had to run two fullsize heats back to back after that. Went out for compact feature (forth heat in a row) got down to three cars, plenty of car left with the other two barely moving and the car dies and wont restart. I look at my tank thinking its dry and notice my gas line is gone. It came out of the tank and dropped through the hole I had for it in the floor. Too many dumb mistakes in one night to count. Glad its 20 years later and I spend more than a weekend building cars. Lol

This year I had my negative battery cable that was a little on the short side. Hooked up ok but it was tight with no slack in it. I knew it before the derby ever started and I had a spare with me that was 8 inches longer. My battery moved in my box and pulled the cable out of the clamp. When the car died, I touched it to the battery to start it once, but didnt work the second time. From now on ill be making sure my cable has slack and that my battery is held tight as well.

Built a caddy a couple years ago, didnt like the tight bend to my backup throttle so ran a second one. Ran the car last year, got down to 2 of us and my Throttle was smashed by the engine in the firewall, the backup worked for a while but broke. Timed out idling. Remembered the second cable when it was time to load lol.And I've been doing this 20 yrs-getting old timers!
