fantastic derby to watch, all weekend. The one-shot classes were just as rowdy as we always expect them to be but my hat is off to the drivers in the TBTC feature who laid it down when the flag dropped. The decibel level hit a weekend peak for sure during those opening minutes when everybody had it to the wood, just incredible. I kept hearing the rumors that TBTC wouldn't be back next year because the count was down but holy $#!t who cares if the count is down when they put on a show like that. Dang.
One reason I believe why the one-shot classes are so rowdy is because it is a one-shot class, not because of the build being one way or another. When you don't have to bring half your garage to the track and you don't have to worry about putting it back together for the final it has a freeing effect on the mind. Combine that with the desire to be the show on the big stage and drivers are much more likely to lose their inhibitions. Food for thought if format changes are being pondered.
One prominent suggestion I have for the promoter has to do with the organizing of the campground- it is a very nice facility with the power and water hookups, layout, showers & bath but one easy thing that could be done to enhance the experience for people would be to create two zones based on noise. I absolutely support the notion that this is a great time and place to provide an all-night-bass-bumpin'-hip-hop dance party where the people who want to get snot-flinging drunk and piss themselves can herd together and howl at the moon. I'm all for it, I absolutely support their right to do it, but I also think it would be easy to have one part of the campground set up with a noise ordinance so that the people who don't want to be a part of that scene can relax peacefully and go to bed at the time of their own choosing. Lay out the two zones ahead of time and let people declare which one they want to camp in, it will be much nicer for everyone on both sides of the fence. Special thanks to the moron who knocked over the trash can and spread garbage all over our site, also to the drunk bastards pissing on my RV and slapping the sides of it in time to "Baby Got Back". Anyhow, it seems like an easy fix. If I were the promoter I would start with a map of the grounds and lay out the areas furthest from the pits and inspection barn as having a noise ordinance during some reasonable hours, like 11 PM to 7 AM or something like that. Let people declare which zone they want to camp in AND arm the people working the gate with this marked-up map so that they could assign the spots properly as the campers arrived. Problem solved. This would also indirectly address the complaint about drunks on golf carts without having to take away the golf carts since the two groups would be at least a little bit separated. We loved having a golf cart this weekend and we are responsible people, please don't take the privilege away from us just because others can't control themselves. That is an anti-American strategy that gets employed way too often in our country.
We sure got lucky on the weather this year, it looked bad in the forecast but panned out pretty good after all. Had a great time and now it's back to the real world until next year.
