Couple of local stock style shows coming up this year.
Not allowed slider shafts. I know a complete stock shaft doesn't take a lot of abuse when the front is nosed up.
Looks for some tricks on building a stock shaft that will pivot further than a stock GM shaft. I know grinding cups and welding U joint caps help but not the end all.
FYI running 71-76 Gm sedans and wagons if that matters.

On a sedan you can shorten your lower control arms by two inches. That changes pinion angle to a point where there less backwards movement to the driveshaft when backend goes up. Also make your driveshaft as long as you can and still install it. A short tailshaft tranny helps a little too. I am no expert but this has helped me in the past.

I always make mine shorter so it can move. Ive never had a car get longer during a derby. JMO Right. I split the difference. I had to beat a 727 yolk out this past year. Thought I had it out long enough, ended up getting shoved deep into the trans, trashed the trans. Had to weld a piece of 1" tubing on the shaft and my buddy and we took turns swingin sledge hammers. First time I've ever had to beat a yolk out. |

I have a 35 series joint welded to the end of the stock driveshaft I run when I have to run one. It allows full articulation. Like stromi said though, the key is in clearances and amount of travel out of the trans. Never shove the yoke all the way in or you will bust the trans and puke the fluid. A good rule of thumb is an inch outside of the trans is the beginning measurement. This allows the yoke to slide in an inch it needs too and leaves the rest to slide out if and when the car starts to belly.

If you can't do that I would suggest duct taping the joint you are running. Sounds crazy, but twice now I have taken the tape off and the caps to the universal joint fell out, so yeah duct tape kept that car running....lol

Pretty genius when you think about it. On a side note anyone have any suggestions on shortening a driveshaft. I feel it cant be as easy as just cutting out a section and rewelding it and maybe rolling it to make it as straight as possible. Seems like too much area for error. If theres a thread point me too it i havent seen one. |
