I like building my own stuff also. I don't see the satisfaction in going out and spending my way to a win. I derby for the challenge and building my own stuff is fun. Thank you Consider what is sufficient vs what is necessary. Most derby engines that were designed 10 years ago were sufficient. You dont need a LS. Look at the high dollar shows and find out what takes them out. It's usually the mechanical periphery (axles, driveshaft, wheels). The engine just needs to be dependable and functional.

Why would he just give out all the info he has worked so hard at? There are four pages of people telling you to listen to what he has to say yet until just recently you wouldn't listen. You say you have talked to a couple engine builders? What engines do they build? Street motors, circle track, demo, little two horse garden tiller motors?..... If I was Scott I wouldn't even be wasting my time trying to explain stuff to you, you clearly have your mind made up on what you want to build so build it and move on. Rant over.....oh wait try some PUNCTUATION! Okay first of all what has he told me other than that's wrong and that's not gonna work, really are you kidding me he hasn't given me one shred of advice other than its a bad idea or its not gonna work, he said show the facts well he has all the facts I would love to learn and see the facts of why 6in rods are so bad and all he's doing is saying what don't work well instead if say oh 6in rods bad idea, then tell mewhat is better or what will work not just sit there saying no this, no that, give me results and what does it matter iv talk to derby engine builders and circle track builders. I have personally have done my own research over the years and know more than you guys think and what did he have to say the main word out of his out is "that won't work" instead of saying stuff like that he could be more like that has not been proven to work try this to point someone in the right direction, instead of just say bad idea or bad choice and I would also like to know how I have made up my mind on my build when I just flat out said debating between a 355 and 383 Read!!! Try not to run around in circles on here and contradict yourself. Let me highlight some things from this post on page 5. "He has all of the facts and I would love to learn and see the facts" "Give me the results" If you really want to learn, don't be concerned about me doing the work for you. You say you will conduct your own research and don't care about what I say? Then why are you on this thread?

See there is two types of guys in here that are diy. I can only speak for my own though
I for one am a guy that comes on here to find out some info and do the best I can to translate what I have learned into my own cars or drivlines. Which I have to work twice as hard to fabricate all my own parts to do the best I can on the track in hopes my hard work pays off to where I can upgrade to better equipment. Which get played off into the other guys that are only here to toss out ideas and demand answers.
As stated above, the other type I am talking about is primarily in a "cry baby" generation. In which there is no learning but handed free answers and struggle to comprehend advice to have to figure it out on their own. This type of person can be taught lessons but it ca uses issues to everyone not just the one person.
I'm not pointing fingers or saying anything bad, just stating facts on answers from veterans to rookies

WHEN I SARTED DERBYING 33 YEARS AGO THERE WERE NO CHECKBOOK DERBIERS, NO INTERNET AND NO VETERANS TO BE HELPFUL IN SIGHT... WE DID IT ALL BY OURSELVES, MADE MISTAKES, WASTED MONEY AND TIME DOING THINGS WRONG TO FIND OUT WHAT WORKED IN REAL LIFE INSTEAD OF OUR IMAGINATIONS.... REMEMBER THE DAYS WHEN ALL WE USED ON OUR CARS WAS THE REAR TO HIT PEOPLE WITH?? I SUGGEST YOU BUILD A FEW DERBY ENGINES, BASED ON WHAT "YOU" THINK WILL WORK. DO YOUR OWN TESTING AND SPEND YOUR OWN MONEY BEFORE YOU QUESTION SOMEONE WHO HAS A WINNING RECORD UNEQUALLED BY THE JOHNNY COME LATELY COPYCATS THAT HAVE PROLIFERATED THE SPORT IN THE LAST 10 YEARS....MAKE SURE YOU BUY HEADER PROTECTORS, A STEERING COLUMN PROTECTOR AND ALSO A DRIVESHAFT PROTECTOR.... QUIT TRYING TO GET SH!T FOR FREE.. PAY YOUR DUES AND MAKE YOUR OWN WAY.......

I'm not asking for anything if you tell me 6 in rods are not a good Idea the you must of had some kind of test with them to tell me there a bad idea and I will conduct my own research I have a derby engine at my house I'm tearing it apart to replicate the clearances cause iv ran it in three derby and all with out water for 20 min plus and never lost power so I'll be fine, it should be a good year next year.

You just told me to basically buy a engine that's derby built my stock 283 I paid 100$ works better than any other motor we have ran, there's no need for 5000$ motors. The motor I'm building I have 900$ into and all quality parts I have

Let me start by saying, I don't buy all the fancy derby shoot, I prefer to make it myself if I think I need it. I rebuild my own engines. My own transmissions. I do all my own tires. All my own gears. Only thing I've bought in 15 years is a shifter. And an engine cradle and dp, that I don't even use. Now that being said, would I like to have all the fancy shoot? Hell yes I would. But I don't need it for the places I run. The equipment I have works just fine. Now, am I going to go out there and tear everybody apart and win? Nope. I don't bring enough friends for that to happen. I can get in the top five. And that is close enough for me. I get just as much enjoyment out of fifth place as I do last. Because I'm there to have fun. And to me. Car wrecks are just, plain, FUN. You've got an engine that will run for 20 minutes, without water, and not lose power. Boy, you got the derby world by the short and curlies, my friend. Look out for this guy. He's taking the derby world by storm this year. I've come to the conclusion that you can't tell this mother trucker anything! Because he already knows it all. I'm not real sure why he's still on here. How many people on here have told you, your not going to get an answer for free from someone who has put they're time in and done they're homework. Put six in rods in the damn thing and let er eat. When, and if it breaks. Learn why it broke and change it. Lesson learned. Move on.

What's a piston squirter? Haha And do I need them on my derby engine? [br. So last season I entered 4 derbies. Qualified to the final in all four. Won two of them. Had no engine issues what's so ever. Both engines did not have squirters so I guess they are not needed. Neither engine was built by gropp with what ever magic scientific fairy dust he uses so I guess it was not needed either. Just saying. (And maybe stirring the pot a little too).

NEVER SAID THAT YOU SHOULD BUY A DERBY ENGINE, JUST WHO I WOULD BUY ANOTHER ONE FROM IN A MINUTE.... COULD I BUILD A "DERBY ENGINE".SURE, I BET I COULD, AFTER YEARS OF TRIAL AND ERROR, WASTED MONEY AND TIME, LOST WINNINGS REVENUE...... BUT WHY? THE WORK HAS BEEN DONE AND THE PRODUCT UNEQUALLED..... I USED TO RUN OLDS 350`S DRYBLOCK, WOULD GET 26-28 MINUTES FROM THEM ALL THE TIME BEFORE BAD THINGS HAPPENED AND FINISHED OUT OF A HIGHER PAYING SPOT. THE REALITY IS, IF YOU FEEL QUALIFIED TO BUILD ONE, GO AHEAD... IF NOT, HIRE SOMEONE TO BUILD YOU ONE THAT HAS A PROVEN RECORD... I AM SICK AND TIRED OF CERTAIN ENGINE BUILDERS CRYING ON HERE THAT THEY WERE RUNNING GREAT UNTIL" SOME MYSTERIOUS CARB,IGNITION,FUEL PROBLEM CROPPED UP.... I LOOK AT IT THIS WAY, IF YOU WANT TO GET A LEG UP, PAY YOUR DUES AND PONY UP THYE MONEY TO BUY ONE, OR START BUYING AND BREAKING PARTS.... AND THINK ABOUT HOW MANY EXTRA HIGHER PLACING MONEY SPOTS YOU HAVE GIVEN UP... FOR ME THE ANSWER WAS SIMPLE... LESS WITH THE JAWS, AND MORE WITH THE PAWS.....
