Im not notching the top of the frame as most people do, I'm gonna go for somewhat in the middle. Debating if some wire to kicker bar to each side of rear to have a little more suppost. never done that tho so would like to know how substantial of a difference it would make. If I just prebend an inch or so should be good right? Any pre bending helps on these cars, I would go more than 1 inch myself but 1 inch is better than nothing

Personal preference on how to do the rear. Have yet to run all-thread but seems it will be pretty tough. Don't plan on doing the usual notch either but am trying something new. Will post more pics when I get there. I would love to see aftermath pics of your car

Hi all. Not new too derbies but all i ever ran before is fwd compacts and mild build rules for county fair which are basically disposable cars. They have a youth class which is 12-16 and parent rides in passenger seat. Rules for youth require midsize. I picked up a 1983 Ford Fairmont sedan which is a solid car no real rust. 90K miles with 200 six motor, 7.5" rear and c4. Rules for youth are no frame welding no tucking or wedging, and factory bumpers. I'm wanting to build it to hopefully last multiple years and be strong without over building it. Plan so far is gut it to basics, relocate the duraspark, i picked up a 3.73 diff & pinion from a ranger and going to weld it as a locker. Run 23 850 14 marathoner r4 skidders on rear and stuffed 7-14.5 8ply on front. Where to dimple or notch so it wont plow? Strengthen the front legally? Are the aluminum bumpers good enough or do I just put on steel? Planning on a floor shifter. What do you guys use? Any advice appreciated. Thanks. My son will be twelve in time for derby and is looking forward to helping and driving.

Fox body needs a bunch of help to compete, starting with a steel bumper.

I'm not looking to cash out on features, just maybe teach my son about car, mechanics and fabrication and keep him interested and off the darn internet. I know fairmont isn't the best car in the world but if he learns something it's worth it. He even said "dad i don't care if we don't win the trophy i just don't want to be the first guy breaking his stick. But a trophy would be cool too." I figure on replacing the aluminum front bumper with steel. I've got a rebar from a Toyota Sequoia in the junk pile for the front. Thinking about leaving the aluminum on the back and doing a lot off notching the unibody rails to get the back to roll up.

Tell your boy not to break off until their jumping on the hood. Seriously tho, not being the first on the trailer is my main goal every time.

Thank you for all the advice so far.
Believe it or not i found a Fairmont enthusiast website and posted i was building this car and does anybody want parts?
Guy about two hours away drove to my place and stripped the entire dash and heater box, the a/c parts and the windshield and the front bumper and header...and HE paid ME!
Yeah i could not believe my good fortune either.
