Have won some money with a 3-speed and have won some money with a 4-speed I just like the 3-speed's setup if you have the money to put everything in it and do it right you should would some money with the 3-speed more than the 4 speed just saying i'm a big fan of the 3-speed reading this thread makes me how ahead of time building to the future wise I've been on some derby car building through the years lol

I am considering running a 3 speed, about how much $$ do you think i'll need to spend to have a competitive setup? any suggestions would work By the time I get my tranny brace and shifter bought ill be around or well over 500 to have my 3 speed setup right. 100 3 speed $60 tap and 2/3 removal. 200 clutch set up 2500 psi pressure plate brass button clutch turned fly wheel $15 extended pilot bearing $40 new throw out bearing and then 200 for a tranny brace shifter and nerat yoke. Plus a good slider to keep from cracking cases. 4:11 are a good all around gear for 3 speed. I personally like my 3.90's in my 12 bolt set up. Some of my buddies are running 3:73 & 3:55 with good luck. Hardly anyone around here runs hydraulic set ups. Mckinnon you mite as well take it to gary wilson and have him tap it for u amd save u time and energy. ALWAYS run a shatterproof housing I've saw a clutch and flywheel come out of a cast housing and almost severely injure someone. Make sure u have some sort of a bracw or you'll be snapping cases left and right. Sorry Iif I got some grammar mistakes. Little bit tired

what 12 bolt are you running that has 3.90 gears?

I managed to drill and tap 2 3 speeds today. Took about 8-10 minutes each. It's amazing what having the correct drill bits can do!

So I ran my first 3 speed set up last weekend. Had a few issues like my linkage coming unhooked on the first hit I continued to run shifting it threw the floor. I last awhile before a hard broadside hit my left ankle broke the clutch pedal off. What are you guys using for a pedal, I was using a set-up from speed way motors and it worked well just the pedal seems weak. TOM

I build my own pedal out of an old brake pedal assembly. Cheap, easy, and effective.

So I have looked at all 6 or 7 pages. Is a Saginaw or Muncie the better choice?? Lookin to set my first 3 speed up any info would be great!

I'm goin to be running my first 3 speed next year and would like to know how to remove second and third gear. I took it apart and took out the shift thing that slides from 2-3 synchronizes. Or is there more to it.

Or is there more to it. I took that fork out of mine and ran a derby. Must have been in neutral, got hit just right and trans shifted into 3rd. Being as how I took fork out trans was stuck in 3rd gear and won't shift to 1st or rev.. Next day put fork back in, shifted from 3rd to neutral and ran two more derbys with no problems.

Well I don't need second or third gear plus a guy around here ran two of them and it kept locking up it up because of 2-3 gear. And I've heard people taking them out

I,ve scattered all sorts of saginaws. I prefer the 70,s model big belly heavy-half truck trannys over the light duty late 60,s 3speeds. I have a light duty in my lincoln n it likes to jump gears. The hd truck in my old iron buick doesn,t.
