3 speeds are a lil too finicky for my liking but a few guys in my area swear by them.

in addition to what swanny said they are also cheap, you can buy a sag 3 speed in my area for 75-100 all day long.

It is also simple to switch/ transfer powertrains from car to car. No messy leaking tranny lines to deal with, no tranny coolers to mount. Once I ran a three speed I never thought about running another automatic. Only problem is on a tacky clay style track you will spit the side of the 3 speed out if you hop the rearend off the ground very much. I only broke one and that was before I ran a slider and the yoke came out as the car nosed up.

i just set my first one up in a 72 electra.. and i'm happy with it so far! used a cable for the clutch... a pedal out of a 73 chevy truck... and made my own shifter and brackets to hold the cable.

you may not have to swap in a trans cooler but you are swapping in a pedal and lines that have to be mounted everytime same thing All my stuff is cage mounted

I'm looking into a manual transmission setup in the near future. Just wondering what might work best behind a built 350 with 5.00 gears. I've always used TH400's but looking to change things up. Thanks in advance!

i run a 5.13 or 5.57 with a 400 turbo... and put a 4.56 behind my 3 speed... and it's wayyyyyy too slow... gonna swap it out for 3.73... because i can literally walk faster than this thing moves at wot

I've been running this 500 gear behind my TH400 and I've loved it. I have another built ford 9 with 4.10's. Sounds like I'll be using that one instead. Also, I am a complete nube when it comes to manual transmissions. Should I be looking for a side loader, top loader, and is there a better gear ratio in the 4 spd's as apposed to the 3 spd's? What vehicle and years would I be looking for for downer parts? I'm willing to do the foot work, just looking for a more specific direction.

I had 4:10's in my car last year and I put 3:73 in for this year, don't have the car together yet so I cant tell you how its going to turn out yet. The 4:10s were a little to low for my liking. Im running a no ring Saginaw 3 speed. I believe they started making them in 66 and continued most the way through the 70's. I'm not positive but I don't believe the 4 speeds have first and reverse on the same shifter pawl on the transmission so their would be a lot more shifting required, a 3 speed first and reverse are on the same linkage so its just straight forward and backward.

only 4 speed u can run is a top load... cant tear them things up though

I run 3.90 with my thres speed and love it. A guy I know runs a truck 4 speed and runs 3.23 gears and is perfect

I take two bolts out, throw the pedal through the shifter hole, lay it on top the motor. Pull motor, put in next car and throw pedal through the shifter hole install two bolts. Its a messy horrible job. Takes seriously 3 minutes to mount and unmount. But your another know it all like MR PANCAKE so keep preaching your gospel.

I welded a not on mine and bolted the yoke that way, I broke many a drill bits trying to tap it
