So a 351 is better than a 302 to build? I'm not gonna put much money in it.

whats not put alot of money in it?
if its not even pull it out of car. first thing i would do is strip motor down of all everything it dosent need and power wash it. dirty greesy motors hold heat. then plug the air holes on back of heads. if running the AOD you will have to ask one of these guys were to wire the tv cable to. ive used 3/4 open but ive heard of others. im a c4 and fmx man myself. Then i would pull intake and put carb intake on. then pull valve covers and pull the stock 1.6s off and put 1.73s off a 351m/400 on it with GOOD valve cover gaskets. Dont put cheap cork gaskets on a derby motor with up threw the hood headers. they run close to the valve cover and can dry/burn out the cork ones and then you got oil running down onto hot zoomies and have a fire. spark plug wise i run NGK v power plugs. Have never had a set foul out on me yet even with a hole with a cracked ring.
this next tide bit is funny but and everyone thought i was retarted but i took my plug wires and rolled them up in aluminum foil and put zip ties around it. and guess with never burnt a plug wire agenst header. if it looks stupid and works it aint stupid.....
if your going to put a little more money into motor i would pull heads and ports the exhaust side of head. focus mostly on the air injection port and gasket matching it not really hogging it out because most of you out there dont know the castings like i do and will go into waster and ruin you heads. i use malit layer head gaskets because i can get them for $80 a set they seal better and wont burn or blow out at high temps.

Thanks for the info! I guess I should have said I didn't want to spend more than a few hundred after I get the motor. I want it for stock shows that have the claimer rule.

OK guys. i have a 88 302 from a marquis, i changed the pistons to factory h.o with the valve relief.. put a e303 cam and gt40 heads.. From everything Ive read with this cam the idle wont be the greatest. What kind of vacuum should i be getting? I'm at about 13 at idle and 20 rev up? at 10 degrees advance thanks

Not a full size guy but I happened across this thread... As an fyi 87-92 mustangs came with forged pistons and rods. Though most probably already knew this.

Do I need to clearance the valves for the e303 cam? From what I can tell the e303 is better than stock.

Sorry I haven't said thank you earlier! Thank you for the help. When I ordered the rockers they came with new guides. Should I use those or use the ones that came on the heads?

I have a stock 302 that was EFI and was in the middle of being converted to a carb setup when I got it. It came with an Edelbrock F4B intake. For a derby setup, should I use this intake or get a stock 2bbl intake and carb?
