I have a stock 302 that was EFI and was in the middle of being converted to a carb setup when I got it. It came with an Edelbrock F4B intake. For a derby setup, should I use this intake or get a stock 2bbl intake and carb? if its in fact a F4B intake ebay that piece! but if your wanting to keep it, it will work fine but your going to need an adapter plate if you are using a 2 bbl which im assuming you are. They don't bring $200+ that's a crock I have 2 of them and put $200 on them and best bid I got was $73.

EFI Engine was from a 1987 Ford
I get the different intake, carb, and fuel pump.
What I have questions on is distributor, tubes from back side of heads, and AOD tranny that is attached.
Distributor-I am going to use HEI but is there any diffierence (shaft length, gear materials, etc.) between distributors across 302s? What do i need?
Tubes on the back of heads-what are there for and do i need to do anything with them?
AOD Tranny-Is there anything special i need to connect (electrically, etc.)?
Any other gotcha's?

Yea , its a 302 block with a 4.030 bore and a 3.400 stroke crank .. What do ya wanna know ? For derby purpose , I wouldn't use it.. Durability and longevity is arguable. Do ya self a favor , and start out with a 351W if you want more cubic inch. Stroking a 302 is sorrta like a pecker extension.. Sure it looks good , but your just fooling yaself..

Im finally getting a start on my ford derby engine its going to be a slow process but I have access to a million dollars worth of machines for the next 6 weeks so I plan on getting all my machining done. Heres the run down of whats all getting done. If time allows I will also get my cyl heads done up with different valve guides a valve job and milling the heads.
Block/rotating assembly: Line hone mains. bore and plateau hone cylinders. zero deck the block. install arp rods bolts then resize rods. fully balance rotating assembly. micro polish crank.

This what plan on doing like what has been discussed explorer heads, 351m rockers, port match exhaust side, can't reallyafford much more than this, unless theres something else ive missed that would be cheap while I had it apart any help apprciated

If you just want to block them off , just cut tha pipe off and flip them over and rebolt.. No need to make a plate .. Ya got one in ya hand.. If it were me though... I use tha factory plug like tha one in tha following link. www.store.partsdinosaur.com/product1521.htmlIts tha same plug that's in tha front of tha head.. Nice and clean !! As for that water pump speedway is probably gonna be your best bet.. Right here.. www.speedwaymotors.com/S-B-Ford-289-351W-Water-Pump-RH-Inlet,1817.html Or you can buy a water pump from any ford 302/289 1969 or older.. All 302's used a right hand inlet water pump thru 1969.. then they switched to tha drivers side.. I have an If you use tha $2.00 plugs you won't have any issues like fordpower111 has in the above picture of making a cut-out in your rear plate. Those plugs are also available at napa , carquest and even tha ford dealer.. They screw in flush with tha head , and it is threaded inside too so you can bolt your rear plate to it also.. I have a 1987 302 from a Crown Vic that is being converted. After plugging the egr/smog port on the back of the heads will I need different valve covers so they have breathers? or are the Stock valve covers ok to keep?

The holes in back of head if for airpump to pump air into exhaust to pass emissions. plug them and if your worried about CCV just pull cap off and run a rag zip tied over filler tube or junkyard a set of old carb motor valvecovers. the older 70s ones are a little taller then others.

Will a distributor with the shorter shaft after the gear (1 in) work ok in an engine that the stock distributor that was longer (1.5 in) without an issue? Engine is a 302 with the longer shaft being stock and I found an almost new Mallory HEI distributor for a good price but it is the shorter shaft. If not I will just order one from skip white.

I run the newer roller 302 engines. We buy the Windsor sr. Heads and put on them and that is it. Waaaayyyyy more power than you will ever use. Run a smaller roller cam and a 650 holly.

The derby engine I ran last year was built and in the car. It's a 302 which turned out to be a good and reliable running engine. They guy I got it from said he out a "Chevy" HEI distributor in it and just did some work on the shaft to make it fit. I'm not sure exactly what he did but I bet some of the knowledgeable people on here could fill you in on how and why he did this. I just know it starts every time even when it's really hot.
