The last time WeCrash was a proboard site (before the .com shutdown), there was a picture of a brown Riviera with the rear end and trunk rolled right to the back window, and the roof and A-Pillars shoved forward.
It may have been a boattail, it may have been a '70s version. It was heading from the reader's right to left.
I'm trying to get this picture again.
If anyone can offer any help, I would greatly appreciate it.
I'm not seeing where the proper photo thread would be, and haven't stumbled across it as of yet.
I sure hope something turns out.
Thanks!!

I remember that pic, it was definitely a boat tail (71-73), but man I can't think of who it was. Them boat tails are notorious for doing that, there was a pic of a white one like that too. Sorry for not being able to help.

the brown one was the one I recall, any pic of one of those 71-73s that did that would be a TREMENDOUS help. I've come across a model of one (71-73) and I'm building it in that same smashed style. I started curling the rear but it's not going quite correct, so I was hoping to pin down some reference pics.
I'm glad to know someone read this and recalls the car. That's a step in the right direction!

That's the pic I was thinking of. Everyone says all 71-73 GM rears are the same in the style they are built, and the way you build them, but when I tell them boat tails aren't the same they get p!ssy... If you look at them, the rear window shape coupled with the design of the quarter panel and back seat side window, makes everything go ugly... I'll always go with the cutting up and parting method with boat tails... On a side note, I think they look cool as he!l, just not as a derby car. The rear window is almost reminiscent of the mid 60's Corvettes.

beautiful. wonderful pics... thanks a ton. The Rooster was the car I had in mind. the No. 06 did pretty good too, the roof bar helped out some, huh?
I've got a final question on these particular cars, and forgive me for being ignorant if it sounds that way.
I don't know the history on these cars, and if/when the frame setup changed from the x-style frame, like under early 60s Impalas and Bel Airs, to the more 'conventional' frame setup of the 70s.
The Riviera stuff was often Riviera-specific. The model car I have is a touch older - maybe, 67-69? It still has the X-frame, versus a more common perimeter frame, like under an Impala or Caprice, or Monte Carlo or whatever.
I'm wondering if the frame was changed in these cars to a more conventional frame, like the other cars of the ealy 70s, with frame rails at the outer edges, of if the X frame continued into the 70s under the Riviera.

from crossmember forwards on 71-3 the frame stub is the same a 74, from there back they have same trailing arm set up etc, but the rear frame rails are shorter than my other 71-3 gms. I have some great rules to work with that allow rear roof barsm and a halo to be welded to the roof, so I am excited to see what i can do with one.

Mine had hump plates which helped a lot, plus the rear rails were boxed in like a 74-6. Knowing what I know now I would do things a little different even if I could not box the rear rails. There is obviously some advantages in putting a little more thought into your down legs and up and over bar. A gas tank protector against the rear sheet metal would help too. I would not be affraid to run one of these again, but it would have to be the right rules and track configuration. I also think looking at just these few pictures that you must have one with clean rear fenders and wheel wells and take every advantage the rules give you in bolting the rear fender wells. Here are a couple pics of the car before it was built.
