Joker, just to clarify you said that the ls1 heads and cam cost about $4 /hp and to not spend over $200 on the combo. So from your experience you can gain about 50 hp from this upgrade.
I've seen various hp ratings on the 5.3 engines, but the stock ratings appear to be 265-305 hp (torque 315 lbf·ft to 335 lbf·ft)
so a stock 5.3 with the ls1 heads and cam could end up producing somewhere between 315-55hp and well over 300 ft lbs of torque?
With the head swap factoring in new head bolts and gaskets adds a bit to the price. Unless you reuse head bolts on these?

The heads and cam swap are not worth that much but when you switch to a carb along with that it does. Its a good cheap upgrade.
I do reuse my bolts and gaskets. the factory ones? no but the aftermarket ones yes. I know everyones telling me to not do it and even my two guys that work in my shop nights who work at Chevy dealers during the day tell me notto but im always against the grain. the factory bolts look nasty as hell when the come out and i have no interest in trying to reuse them. I understand why they say put new ones in it, not just for the bolt stretch characteristics. The new ones i buy are advance or whatever, i used them in a 24 endurance engine, then went into a 6.0 derby motor till someone from the stands wanted to buy it less the heads and then into the engine i have in my suicide. The dont have any real miles on them but they do have torque cycles on them. So far so good. we will see how long they go before something happens. also after the first time i did not do the torque angle meter deal with them, just tightened them at random to 65 lbs. Is it the wrong thing to do? Yes do i sugest anone else to do it? no, absolutely not. but thats how i am and how i work, i find the threshold on everything.
I did finally blow one of these 6.0's up in my endurance car. broke a piston. had 170,000 miles before i started i think and a derby and many 7500 RPM 24 hr endurance races on it before it finally sh!t the bed. Pounded the wrist pin through the block. She had a pretty rough life for a stock engine. Got my moneys worth and needed a mock up motor anyways. ;D

There is 4 coolant passages at the front of these motors does anyone no what the bottom 2 are for and the top 2 are for? reason im asking i want to retro-fit an old style smallblock water pump to it and a water neck manifold so i can do away with the reverse flow and serpintine belt and the poor rad hose placement? any input would be appreciated.

Aftermarket stewart pumps allow for correct rad hose placement. and you can run the pulley system you want. pump is expensive though.

Ok just went and checked out the stewart pump and its the right idea but its also expensive like u said and would work good until the first time i run the nose off my car....lol Im willing to put some time in on machining some sort of an adapter plate cause i have access to mills lathes welders etc. By doing this i thought water pump replacement is still cheap i can run my old style altenator and power steering pump and still have room for my cradle.

I've been following this thread for a while and am intrigued by what these things are capable of. I have a couple of quick questions.
1. How creative do you have to get with motor mounts to mount these things in a 71-76 GM or are the mounts in a similar location to an older SBC?
2. Can you bolt a TH 400 trans to one of these with an adapter plate of some sort?
3. Joker...do you sell these things turn key?
4. Anyone out there building DP's or cradles for these things yet?
Thanks....Jay
