Picking up a car that has a running 318 in it. Gonna try to derby with it, will be stock except for timing chain. What's the best carb to use? 2bbl or 4bbl? I believe it has a 4bbl right now but I think its a junk thermoquad.

if it is factory 4 bbl with Thermo quad then it is probably the police 318 with the bigger heads. I think these run nice with an Edelbrock 600, all you need is an adapter plate to go from the spreadbore-to-squarebore 4 bbl

Would there be any advantage to putting a set of new heads (off of say a 98 360) on an older say a 77 360?

Would there be any advantage to putting a set of new heads (off of say a 98 360) on an older say a 77 360? Magnum heads have a better oiling system and they have a surrounding or shrouding around the valves that provides a better swirl. the intake bolts are vertical instead of angled 45 so you have to get an intake for a magnum engine. Also, make sure if you do use them that you use the magnum pushrods, thats how they get their oil. the bosses are there like the LA's but they aren't machined out.

got a weird problem just got my 360 running put a points dist in and the motor fires right up runs and idles just fine, now the weird part is when i step on the brake and put the car in gear it seems to bog down really bad and stall at times. Acting like the trans is in lock up ,like trying to take of in third gear if it was a standard. any thoughts? Should mention brake booster eliminated so nothing to due with that, I have the little lever on the tranny tied halfway back, i did leave the vacuum advance off with the line plugged but i don't think that should have anything to do with it? Oh and the tranny is good if i 2 foot the gas and brake the car moves just fine with lots of power and no slipping

I was confused after reading this... why would this help diagnose his problem? If he is experiencing the problem in gear with the brakes on, why would the symptoms change if the car is jacked in the air? He is still holding the brakes after all.... am I missing something? .... but yeah, I tend to agree, it sounds like the converter has issues.

because you would put car in gear and release the brakes when it is in the air. With no load of car on drivetrain the convertor might work fine. Then when its on the ground the same convertor might be slipping enuff that it acts like its stuck in between gears, kinda like when the clutches lock together in a automatic tranny when they have got to hot...hopefully i dont confuse anybody....lol
I actually am confusing myself..lol
