No it's not that lol when it's in drive and u floor it it's off the limiter like it should but in reverse it has a much lower limiter that is way to low almost like a governor for reverse I've ran a bunch of older taurus wagons and never had this before....

Its so low I honestly don't think I'll be able to get any speed or get out of the way if I need to in reverse

Hmm. Tranny fluid low? Tranny filter plugged and messing with reverse?
Those transmissions are weird, i've taken 3 apart. Not sure if a servo inside going out could be causing a problem with it....

My uncle drives an 02 Pontiac....same deal...won't let it exceed 2200 rpm (give or take) in reverse.

1988 Taurus doesnt have wiring for the tranny. Its got a manual downshift pressure cable thats bolted near the shifter linkage attaches under the hood. 90 was when they started switching it to electronic. So yes that means 86-90 trannys do not switch into 90-95 cars unless modded. The internals also have different sized clutch packs and cant be swapped with internal parts either.... We tried. :/

Could you unplug the wires from the transmission so the computer doesn't know you're in reverse? Never messed with tauruses not sure if it would work, but thought it might be worth trying. I'm gonna try doing that.. I know it's not fluid or anything actually it's functioning exactly the way it should just not for derby use lol.. When I finish my Vic I will get it back out and try that and let u know if it works.. Id imagine it's an electronic limiter for reverse like u mentioned so we will see !

In my opinion they are better nose cars anyways. Ran a Wagon that had a rotted sub and just went forward and still never bent. The sub had more missing on the bottom of the drivers side then what was left even

For any compact I would take off the rear bumper and prebend a notch. UNLESS that car is specifically known to have a strong backend and doesn't plow from factory.

^^I've never seen a steel bumper break in half... ^^^^Seen it on a few occasions. Even welded up "good" bumpers.
