yes a new cam will give you more power if everything else is matched to cam you pick out.

First get an HEI set up from skipwhite on ebay (my preference), then a summit high output coil. New plugs and wires, a good carb, then start working on more, thats what i would do, dont get to crazy with a cam if you dont do anything else to the motor. A little bit higher of a cam will do your purpose fine im sure.

Thanks guys. I planned on redoing all the wiring, a new distributor, and all that good stuff.

There's been some discussion about cams and related considerations already. The stock pistons are going to be your limitation, at 8:1 compression it just isn't going to support a radical cam. I'd consider a 268° advertised duration to be a practical upper limit for camshafts with a stock bottom end. IMO, for derby use the stock bottom end needs no improvement. If you are used to chevy engines where rebuilds and performance enhancements are the norm, it's a whole different world with a Chrysler engine. If you want more power you'll get a much better value from adjusting the axle ratio than throwing money at the engine. I like 4.10 to 4.56 gears behind my 400's depending on the application. Mother Mopar built us a very, very stout engine, I say why mess with a good thing...

What do you guys think of using an HEI style distributor on a BBM? im thinking it would be much more reliable and easier to wire in than using the old points style unit. Any thoughts?

Is there any cradles made out there for these? Just the lower. Nothing more. Simple. Maybe a PP.

the issue with a bb is the dist in the front...im going to stick with my CHEAP points....only because it does seam quite often your core supports pushed right up onto it.. ive changed more bbm dist than any other..I know Hei can cost a little more...JMO but im cheap

But it's still a DP... Whats the difference in a DP in the back coming in contact with the firewall/dash bar and a DP in the front which really won't come in contact with anything besides maybe keeping the nose down a little longer... If the rules say you can have a DP but has to be 5 inches from the dash bar you're golden.
