Just Curious the pros/cons of going with a hei dist. Have always run points and was thinking about switching. Any difference for big block/small block either?

A HEI distributor will hit or be very close to valve cover on a bigblock mopar engine. I've also head stories that some HEI distributors hit some intakes on smallblock mopar engines.

On stock intakes with an hei that has been cut and fitted, mopar bottom and Chevy top yes they hit at least on some 318 intakes. The neck is to short and doesn't slide all the way in. Your Buick converted ones fit fine though.

There's a guy on here that sells a piece to put a hei in a mopar, was thinking about it but not sure since u guys said there's a chance of it hitting intake and that.

Just get a hei made to fit the adapter one seem to never stay tight on the ones we've used.

Using a Buick HEI with the adapter has worked good for me on SBM. To keep them from moving. I welded a larger washer to the original hold down, with a slot cut in it. This will contact more of the HEI housing. But, then again, I have never ran a points style dist.

IDK anything about Mopars but I just bought one of these HEI distributors off Ebay for my 318. It is about the same size as the factory distributor that I removed. It is not even close to being as big as a GM HEI. I have not wired it up yet but it dropped right in without any adapters. I did a visual comparison to the old one and everything looks the same externally. It has an internal HEI ignition module built in and requires an external coil. I dont know much yet but I will in a month or so when I fire it up.

I got one of those too.works fine. First one was a dud though and got a free replacement after it ran for 10 seconds.I think I had wiring messed up on my truck though because I had to rewire my engine harness...I think I may have shorted it out and burned up the module.

I've tried a lot of different things.
Buick HEI with adapter: Pros- none really, ran fine but no noticeable improvement over points. Cons- extra time to construct, giant friggin cap just begging to be broke.
hybrid HEI module wired to a Mopar electronic distributor: Pros- none really, ran fine but no noticeable improvement over points. Cons: extra time to construct, lots of wires which doesn't bother me but does bother some people
Skip White HEI: Pros- none really, ran fine but no noticeable improvement over points. Cons: still haven't figured out where to buy a replacement cap or rotor. Skip White hasn't returned the emails I sent asking about it.
Personally I think all the HEI talk is just hype, if I had to guess I think there is a placebo effect going on because chevy guys hate all things Mopar and just can't wait to bolt chevy parts on Mopar engines then tell everyone how great it is. Nonetheless, I keep experimenting with it just to be sure I'm not missing anything. So far I haven't seen anything to convince me that HEI is any more desirable than points. I've experienced random part failures with every kind of ignition.... points, Mopar electronic, GM HEI, Ford Duraspark, aftermarket solutions.... and have seen no evidence that any of them are more reliable than any others.
I've been meaning to do a dyno comparison of the different ignition systems on the same car on the same day just to map out the numbers and put the issue to bed once and for all but I haven't been back to the dyno in almost two years. Maybe this year I'll get it together. I know that in theory you'll have more spark scatter with points which should cost you a tick here and there but I have to wonder how you will tell the difference in a derby car in the mud...

DMC440c - Thank you very much and very well said. That was the response that I looking for. I guess I will stick to what I know and what works as of now.
