I wouldn't put more than fifty bucks in one of these. Around 150 horse and heads that crack if you look at them wrong. Tuneup, new fuel pump, new starter, hei, and cables. I wouldn't even put headers on. As for the carb, I wouldn't touch it( if it works decent) maybe pull it off changed the gasket and cleaned it with some sea foam.

I wouldn't bother with headers on a 307. for numerous reasons
1- you'll probably never use them again (not cost efficient) 2- you MUST have forward dump headers because of steering and brake booster clearances (they cost extra) 3- the exhaust ports are below the spark plug holes so you are going to struggle with wires melting on the pipes 4- IMO header wrap is a must to save the plug wires from melting.(costs extra) 5- if you do go with center dump headers you will need to get rid of the brake booster and go back to manual brakes.
save the money to invest in next year's car. and have cool lookin pipes on a real motor. I'm a mopar guy but the worlds cheapest motor is the small block chevy. there were millions built and 99% of all the parts are interchangeable like pile of lego pieces. if you want cheap invest in a small block chevy. do what you gotta do to get by with this first junker."use what ya got" but i wouldn't start putting money into it on specialized stuff. buy stuff like a good carb (can be used on other cars) build a really good battery box that can be re-used stuff like that. save your money for the next one.

After doing alot of reading, I would have to agree with you. I am really starting to dislike this 307 and now I am stuck with it. I know i could pull it and sell it and try to get a sbc since I already have parts and headers for that.. would a sbc work with my 200-4R tranny?

Also wanna thank you for all your input. Its been very helpful. I am sure I can find a cheaper SBC on craigslist that if I sell my 307 or even scrap it for core that I might be able to afford a complete motor swap so that I can start building a good motor year by year instead of working with this olds. Whats your thought on this?

No, the 200R you have has a BOP bolt pattern on the bell. Get on Craigslist and find a cheap but reliable SBC, even a 305 is just fine and they're a dime a dozen. Find yourself a cheap Turbo 350 trans and you're fine. Sometimes, you can score a cheap 400 trans if you know what you're looking at. 3/4 and 1 ton 2 wheel drive trucks had 350/400 combos alot of the times.
