Trucks are starting to gain popularity in our area at some derbies. My question is, is there an Imperial of the truck world? I don't want to build a pillow for my first truck, but I'm use to good old iron derby cars. Is there one or two that seem to be better than the rest? We cant have a 4wd front axle, has to be 2wd.

60-71 dodges are very tough around here, I myself prefer the 60s fords but it's alot of what your rules are

I found a 63 Ford, but not sure if that's one of the desirable years or not? I figured that there would be more input after 45 people have read the thread....

I would build the ford over the dodges, dodges have steering box issues,

57-64 ford's are the desirable ones. They have factory front leafs

Thank you. I found a 63 Ford for a decent price and I think I'll try that for my first truck build.

I live in N. Idaho, so the truck will be run somewhere in Washington, Idaho or Montana

I think a scout II would kick ass. Full boxed frame and a removable metal roof that can be welded solid. As for what I have seen run if a 70s Chevy is built right they are strong. Mine had 5 derbys with 3 top 3 finishes! 76 2wd 3/4 ton. Suburbans do well if build right.
If I could bring myself to derby one, the 73 to 79 Ford's do very well.
I have seen an international pickup run. It was strong but was always mechanical failure that took it out.
Steer clear of 80s Ford's! These are your "pillow"!

We are seeing the newer style superduty Fords win around here. It has become the '03 Vic around here of the truck derbies.
I've been to Mayhem and if I ever go back I'll bring a good book and sell race fuel to the drivers. For a good time go to the Bash for Cash!

57-64 Ford one tons would probably be the closest to an "Imperial" of the truck world IMO. A few tid-bits when looking for a truck: 4x4 frames are better than 2x4. Straight axle and a good leaf pack up front is crucial (make your own if necessary). Front leaf mounting is crucial to making a good truck vs a truck killer . The straighter the frame (without bends) the better. Frames that are boxed to the firewall bend at the firewall without help to prevent that. That should give a little food for thought.

If you can find a 1 ton straight frame that's what I would use, jmo.
