Just wondering if anyone has ran a collapsible steering shaft ? If so pros an cons plz all knowledge is appreciated.

You mean telescoping? Or the actual collapsing ones like on dirt cars?

Collapsing like dirt cars between steering box and firewall thats telescoping, Lincoln was talking about ones that if your in a wreck they will collapse. Perfect, thx for the pics redneck. The collapsing style that collapse in a wreck are they spring loaded? Or do they collapse and stay? I just want a good understanding before I build one for next season. I understand the telescoping style just not familiar with the other.

The whole point of a telescoping shaft is so it will collapse as your nose goes up or in.
Find the happy medium of having enough in but plenty of room to collapse. You can make a decent setup on cheap with 2 Crown Vic shafts or spend the $60 bucks on SWEET joints.

Ok I will be more specific please correct me if im wrong because I'm wrong more than I'm rite. lol What i wanted to know is between my dash bar and steering wheel . Do they make a shaft that would collapse on impact and bottom out on dash bar or close to it so u don't crush hands? I apologize for not being more specific initially. I totally understand the telescoping as front end looks to the sky . I guess I might be trying to reinvent the wheel ? lol thx fellas

You have a solid shaft going from your wheel through your firewall. Then a knuckle, then your telescoping shaft, then a knuckle and then your gear box.

I thought of putting a collar on inside of firewall before the knuckle with a sort of spring setup like off a dirtbike rear shock stiff but would float about 10 inches on impact. Or a bracket that was built off my dash bar to get similar effect. I wasn't sure if the dirt track cars use similar style or not . Like I said prob reinventing wheel and should put my mind toward other things the smarter people already figured out for me lol

Ummm why? Do you really want your steering wheel to push in and out every time you make a hit?
Stop thinking about it and build one like the pic above and how I described.

This is a collapsible shaft for race cars, collapses once your body hits it to prevent crushing your chest. www.speedwaymotors.com/Speedway-Collapsible-Steering-Column-22-1-2-32-Inch,14416.html, As far as the shaft your steering wheel is attached to collapsing thats not needed....that will be a solid 3/4 dia shaft, the only part that will collapse/telescope is the part from the firewall to the steering box. to build the same shaft I built here is what you will need. 1 quick disconnect for the steering wheel. Item # 8352701130 speedway motors 2 .757 hole 3/4 heim joints. Item # 1750757 speedway motors 1 3/4 dia solid steel rod. 1 13" or 15" STEEL steering wheel capable of accepting the quick release hub. 4 .750-.757 lockable collars, they will be used on both sides of the heim joints to keep shaft from sliding. Item # 6435K16 McMaster-Carr. 1 chevy astro van steering shaft, the shaft will run from the firewall to the steering box. Look for astro vans with composite headlight buckets. Sorry I dont have exact years on those. 1 crown vic steering shaft, the shaft you need will run from the firewall to the steering box. It will be cut apart and one end will get welded to the 3/4" solid shaft while the other will be inserted into the non splined end of the astro van shaft and will be tightend down by the factory bolt. I will try to get a picture of the section from the crown vic shaft you need. This setup will not bind even when the car noses bad!!! The car pictured here has the setup I posted already, the trans was in the dirt and My girlfriend still has complete steering. Uploaded with ImageShack.com

thx man I appreciate all the input and help I will be ordering parts this weekend. I just got rid of astro that I took hydroboost off of for the 55 bel air but I'm sure I can get another one thx again

I have built many Astro based steering setups. However I recently stumbled acrost a 90s Dodge truck steering shaft. Man that sucker has allot of travel. It will be incorperated into my next setup.

I was hoping you would chime in, Your the one who brought my attention to the astro van shafts I was hoping you remembered the years of the vans that had this particular shafts. The Astro van shafts work great. I think the Dodge truck shafts might be better. I have not built one yet. I have tried to stay out of the whole steering column arguments on here. Everyone has their own opinions on them. Some people like the solid (no collapsable section) setups. All I can say is experiment and see what works best for you. Personally I dont like a long floppy steering shaft coming towards my chest during impacts as some setups have. I like a colpasable section so I can have several heim joints supporting my steering wheel so I can put a firm grip on it when making track shots. Do whatever works best for you. I buy a ton of parts from the vendors on here. Most of the parts that I buy are superior in quality to somthing that I can make with hand tools. However, I have always and will continue to make my own steering setups. You can buy a handful of u-joints and heims from speedway for way less than what they want for a pre-fab setup from one of the vendors. There are a lot of people on here who swear by those types of setups. Im glad that they are happy with them. I prefer to make my own. I am in no way trying to discredit any or the vendors setups. Its all personal preference.
