My cars are never finished. If it were not for the deadline of the derby, Id take three years to build a car. I love building them as much as running them.

What's facebook? There is only Wecrash for me. If it dies, I'm done with the internet. Im so old, I rember when there was no PCs much less internet. I cut grass to buy a Walkman. My first computer was a Commodore 64. All you could do with it was make your name or whatever scroll across the screen. 20 go to 4

Ran my first derby Saturday. Wish I had spent more time driving the car before the big day. Spent a pile of time building the car but very little driving before the derby to get used to driving backwards and starting a hot car. I guess this will come with time. Had my shifter bend and couldn't get trans back any farther than neutral so only had forward gears and got pushed nose first into dirt barrier. Could have been prevented with a little more thought when building.

306derbyguy brings up a great point. I used to build my cars in suburbia, test driving wasn't much of an option. At the time I had no choice. There's nothing better than being able to rip around the back 40 to get a feel for the car and see if everything is running right. I learned that as soon as I had access to a back 40, LOL.

List of ideal things to bring for derby day - spare tires -spare belts -5 gallon jug full of water for topping up radiator -spare radiator -chains/come alongs/ slings for straightening or pulling out sheet metal - sledge hammer -6' pry bar or some kind of big bar to tweak bent metal -engine oil/brake fluid/ tranny fluid -assortment of wrenches and hand tools -duct tape/9 wire/ chains and bolts/electrical tape -extra length of battery cable and crimp on ends -few bolts to fix a ball joint -grinder/torch/sawzall something to trim metal -pipe wrench to fold fenders up and out of the way -spark plug wires -cooler of ice for water juice etc to stay hydrated -safety gear:helmets boots coveralls glasses -battery charger -generator -welder -entry fee cash With myself being new to the sport it was a lot to take in on what a guy was going to need being an hour away from the garage. Was handy having all that we brought and even managed to help a couple others out at the derby with tools and spare parts.

My advice for rookies. find a car, build to rules and make a very stout cage. The pedal on the right makes the car move, hold that to the floor the entire time. the pedal on the left makes the car stop, we don't typically use that pedal. only reason we have it is because they make you prove you are able to stop in tech, or if your going towards a wall. Depending on the class and what car you have, hold that pedal on the right down and go nose out the entire time until you win or can't move.

STROMI 121 when are you going to retire. Butch is 70 and just ran the stock class at the bash. So I have another 25 years left if my neck allows.

The real answer is after I have had a lasting positive effect on the sport that I love. So, I may never be done.
