For making a distributor protector/trans protector do you put the steel in-between the transmission bell housing and the block? This is for a sbc set up. I think if you put steel in-between the block and bell housing it would spread the transmission away from the block and may shear something or have a weak spot. All I have ever ran is stock or weld with kickers, but want to broaden my horizons. Also how thick is good enough for a dp protector 1/4in and up???

I have a 1/2" dp from Big Rock that has a universal plate (chevy and BOP) transmission holes drilled. If you space the torque convertor bolts there are no alignment issues, no weak spots as you say because the torque convertor sits in the same place (just with a spacer and longer bolts in the tc). Have had zero trans issues with it.

I built my tranny cradle to mount to my d/p. didn't have to worry about spacers and is easy to remove for shows that don't allow them.

Use 1/2 thick atleast....anything less your wasting your time and money 1/2 thick midplate you will need a crank spacer ($30) and then space your flywheel (free) and you will never have any issues

I never spaced the crank, just three 1/2 inch washers to space the torque convertor.

Consider yourself very lucky you haven't exploded a trans.....the spacer holds the snout of the convertor to keep it balanced without it your asking for problems

^So are you bolting the spacer in between the crank and flywheel or crank, flywheel then the spacer with longer bolts?

The spacer just slides in the back of crank and then the snout of convertor slides into spacer

The spacer just slides in the back of crank and then the snout of convertor slides into spacer So what are you doing about the starter that is now 1/2 inch away?

The starter and flexplate\flywheel do not move. The only thing that moves is the torque converter.

you should have a touque convertor made. just tell them you have a 1/2" thick mid plate. so you don't have to use any space between convertor and flywheel(bolts or snout). ambruzzi makes them.

Stromi is correct maybe you dont realize that your torque converter actually sits inside the crank through the center of the flexplate all he is doing is adding a spacer for the back of the crankshaft to keep the torque converter centered to the crank.
