8.8 and a 10 bolt GM are basically the same rearend. Make an 8.8 a BIA and you have the same thing. Axle tubes are much thinner on a 8.8. I've also seen them break at the carrier and the tube come out.

Ive got an 8.8 with big bore ends welded on, 35 spline hobby stock with full spool setup in an unbraced housing with only tubes welded in for stock shows that dont allow bracing. I have had good luck with it.

So what axle would be under a 77 ford ltd2 wagon? Would it be a 9" or that 8.7 rear end?

Gentleman, I was wondering if you can weld a trac-lok 8.8 the same as an open rear end, or would I need to get a carrier from an open rear end to be able to weld the gears? I don't have the axle yet, or I'd just take it apart and find out. Ya you can still weld them just takes a bit longer because of the wavy plate between either side of the spider gears.

You can just weld top and bottom to carrier on both sides and not even touch the plate in the center. I like to stay off the cross pin and c clips just in case any work has to be done afterwards.
