Ok I have a 400 4 bolt main block I'm starting with. I was thinking about putting a 377 destroker kit from speedway in it. I'm just wanting to get some feedback on doin the 377 setup and if speedway is a good setup. It would be the 377 economy stroker kit. Thanks for any input

Whats your reason to destroke a 400? Only makes it more difficult to make power.

I've just heard from some stock car guys that the 377 likes the rpms more. That's why I asked, I just want to see what the best option for this motor would be

How many RPMs do you plan on turning? A derby motor rarely gets into high RPMs nor is it necessary for them to.

This is my first ground up build so I'm just tryin to get an idea what would be good. I like to put my foot in the carb quite a bit, I just want something with some power but won't stuggle under hi rpms. What do you think would be a good combo to run. I'm starting with a bare block so I have to buy everything for it.

Is the Speedway crank an actual 377 crank or is it just a 350 crank and you have to buy the spacer bearings?
I'm sure other company's do as well but I know Scat sells an actual 377 crank, has the 400 journals with the 3.48 stroke. No need for spacer bearings

all the kits i found from speedway except for one had spacers. they had one set for 1300 bucks that had the 350 crank, 5.7" rods and 377 pistons and main bearings with no spacers. and it was scat crank and rods

Joker would be your guy for a 400 build. A 377 wouldn't be a bad build but for our purpose I think you'd be happier with a 400.
If you have to buy everything I would suggest 6" rods. Much better rod angle, causes less friction/wear, doesn't rob as much power and a smaller piston makes less weight. Especially with the 3.75" stroke.

IMO who cares about the high rpms, your not a circle track guy at is going one direction all night trying to keep momentum. In derby your going from idle to maybe 7000 rpm based on gear over and over, and what makes you go? TORQUE, what makes torque? STROKE, I think your hurting yourself by destroking a 400 in both displacement for power and stroke for torque. You run a derby engine idle to 4000 more often than than anything else.... High rpm motor your looking at running stall converters and everything else which just adds more complexity and possible issues
Take as you will but if I was ground upping a engine with no real budget or a large one, I would build a 400 based on advise from a reputable 400 guy as there is tricks and tips to them....or if you had a 350 block, build a 383 for torque..
