looks rough but i love 73 chevs, personally i think its one of the easiest cars to build competitive from mild to wild.

My 1972 Olds 98 that I put a dodge 360 in and leafed a 8-3/4 rear end. Ran 3 times in 2016 still going strong

It's a gm thing. Axle tubed are just pressed in Yep, I've seen a few 10 bolts tubes come out. I'm not sure if you could really ever weld the tubes to the cast iron center. Just take a strap from tube to tube. Some have welded them with luck supposely. Out of all the 10 bolts I've ran never had one do it but saw a few do it.
