It's a gm thing. Axle tubed are just pressed in Yep, I've seen a few 10 bolts tubes come out. I'm not sure if you could really ever weld the tubes to the cast iron center. If you look closely I had a brace on it at one time, but rule changes in my area forced me to cut it off. I tried to weld the tube to the housing, but your right...it don't really work. Overall I will take a BIA rear over a 9" though.

Yes it is possible to weld the tubes to the housing, I have done it on 3 of my rear ends after having the housing twist downwards with solid supension. What u need is called Nickel rod, it is not cheap as it costs me $3.00 per rod and it only comes for a stick welder to my knowledge, main thing is make sure the area is clean and you need to heat the area up with a torch before welding it, I have had good success doing it this way, hope it helps for those who have had this problem.

As undertaker11 noted above, that's how we weld ours. Nickel rod & stick welder. My first rearend from 20 + years ago is still spinning skidders. We have fixed 7 rear-ends like this and only broke the tube out of one. Removed the guts & put in another housing. I'll heat housing with torch a little bit & then lay three or four fat beads around tube.

Just to clarify the tube didn't just slide out. After a closer look it split the whole front side of the differential. I'll try to get a pic of it if it ever warms back up around here.

Gearhead149, Here are some pics of the trunk. I don't claim to be an expert on this. Years ago I tried to keep up with the rapid changes, but it just got to be too much time and $$$. I decided getting married and having a family was more important. I do what's within my abilities. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't mind having a "big" motor someday, but I sure do enjoy it when I can leave the track at the end of night knowing that I beat several cars with big motors and tons of after market gadgets.

The 3rd pic down. have you ever had that knock cap off. I cut mine all out It didn’t knock it off. Barely touching. One more hit is need new distributor. Normally I cut all th way thru the top, but I thought I had room... Guess not lol. I normally do a milk crate sized hole for distributor, cut from top to few inches below distributor. I got lucky.

I have a CLEAN 74 olds 88 two door for next year and will definitely cut more out. These cars bend quickly.
