73 Caddy. GTP pinned against package tray, one inch solid body mounts with 5/8 bolts, overkill cage, and one inch allthread shocks. Trunk canoed and welded solid. Frame not dimpled or notched. I know how these do with plates. Considering leaf converting this year. Never leaved a Caddy. Im thinking it would benefit from a conversion. Just looking for more opinions.
Coil spring cars may be converted to leaf springs 7 springs maximum 5/16 thick 2 1⁄2 wide and no longer than 60 in length there must be a 1 stair step. Springs cannot mount farther forward than the body mount in front of rear end main leaf must be on top of springs and rear end must set on top of main. Front mounting bracket may be 31⁄2 wide X 5 long no thicker than 1⁄4 Rear shackle can be no bigger than 1⁄4 X 5 and must be a working shackle.

With that set of rules, is just slap some heavy plates on the side of the humps and run it like that. As long as your comfortable that the hump plates are thick enough and won't blow. I'd choose that route. Nick

Having to have a working shackle is kinda lame.

I leafed 2 cars this year and won't do it again. If you loose a main you are screwed!!! With the way guys can get things to roll now and as long as you can keep the humps clean for the drive train to work good i'd let it roll.

Don't want a 73 caddy to roll....want that sumbitch hard...when you build a 73 caddy to roll you are wasting half the car for sure.

73 is the only caddy with decent rear frame rails. 74-76 are like an impala or buick of those years. The downside is they all have Cadillac humps.

The real question is are leaves sucked down with allthread stronger than hump plates? It seems as though it would be but I have never leaf converted one so I figured it would make good conversation.

I assume you can chain the hump to rearend as well??
I wouldn't be afraid of the working shackle situation, plan it out so that wen you chain or cable it down tight the shackle points backward and the eye of the spring is tight against the frame, the shackle "works" if I let the pressure off... also for rear shackle use a actual shackle not just 1/4" plates, most shackles will have a bent round up edge, this will help from twisting, look at a roundy shackle.
The key is what you can do with the front mount, caddy knowledge is limited and never thought about leafing one, would really have to look at front mount and what can be done there so it doesn't want to belly

It won't belly with a 32 inch GTP and your allowed home made perches. You don't have to use the factory control arm mounts. You can put mounts under or on the side of the frame. No chain on the humps but one inch allthread "shocks" does the same thing.

I would run hump plates. Should be just fine, leafing a caddy doesn't feel or sound right, just like if you were to use any bumper besides a pointy on one.

Is their any minimum length of leafs?

Nope. I was thinking right past base of humps where it turns to I beam. My buddy is thinking closer to bumper bracket. I haven't got that far yet. Still in the plotting and planning stage.

I'm still going to go hump plate then if they are the same as 74-76. Can hump plate ve on the inside of the hump?
