If the car doesn't get totaled out... There was some insurance guy that was at my work a while back and he was saying that in the last few years it has gone from around 20% to 45-50% of claims that get totaled out. Largely due to the cost of damage from air bags going off and replacing the airbags. This was the case over 10 years ago when my mom's '99 Lumina got totaled. this must've been around '05 because she had just finished paying it off. Light right front hit that popped the airbags. I drove it home from the accident site (because I'm the guy that drives smashed cars, as I was told). Probably could've been fixed, but airbag replacement was several thousands of dollars, I'd like to say north of $4k. Also, nobody's gonna use airbags from a scrapped vehicle. That's a lawsuit even thinking about it. A quick visual inspection had damage to the hood, RF fender, bumper, grille, airbags and windshield. Something in the RF was rubbing against the wheel but the car drove fine other than that. As far as the newer gasket gunk being stronger, that may have to do with wanting to keep glass intact in a rollover, as it helps keep the roof up when it's still there.

Its legal to install used airbags but no insurance company or shop is willing to accept the liability. The simple and basic problem with used air bags is not knowing its history. I have installed used bags on a friends tow truck and when another of his drivers wrecked it again they performed flawlessly. The problem with not knowing the history is because the bags have little sodium azide tablets in them that are the explosive. They have the appearance and consistency of an asprin tablet. If the bag is ever dropped the tablets crumble and turn to dust. Then when ignited during a deployment they have too much force. The excessive force could easily cause bodily injury. The other typical senecio of a used bag is if those tablets get wet they may not ignite at all.

Got to sell those $1,200 windshields some how That is definitely not a factor because almost everyone uses aftermarket replacement glass. The OEM manufacturer doesn't profit from that.

Got to sell those $1,200 windshields some how That is definitely not a factor because almost everyone uses aftermarket replacement glass. The OEM manufacturer doesn't profit from that. they do if no one else makes it. Can't think of a per instance but I believe some saturn glass is a dealer only item. And unless I'm behind here, which could be the case, not any aftermarket glass works with the heads up on the windshield, but again that might not be the case no more. It's been many years since I installed windshields so it's entirely possible that info doesn't apply anymore.
