I became a fan of welding the side gears to the carrier after slapping this band aid on a rear so I could get one more run out of the car..... 2 runs and one heat win later and it still was holding. Not saying it was an Ideal fix but at the time I didn't have any other options. That's the same reason I figured out the better way.

I tack weld the spiders then remove the axles. Keeps them from getting hot and brittle. After they are removed I weld the spiders in tight. As for a Ford 9", mini spools are cheap and easy, 30 bucks from Summit racing.

Track size, track conditions, what type and size tire are some variables when selecting gears.

I would not use that big of a gear. I like the mid-high 4s but that's a personal preference.

Too low IMO but at the same time, some is how you run the skinny pedal 4.88 is my fav, as you have a pretty low gear and you can still mash the skinny and not worry as much about engine damage.... 5.10 max

I've always used 513 gears, I can't tell the difference from a big and small track with them, but I'm always on the skinny pedal and nothing bad happened yet
