Hi Guys,
Ok, I ran 6 cars this year and either broke drive shafts or had the driveshaft pull out in 4 of them.
So I am wanting to build 2 slider driveshafts, one for my ford cars and one for my GM cars.
I have modified & shortened driveshafts for years and I have a pickup load of driveshafts so parts are not a problem.
My question is, do any of you build your own sliders and if so, how do you build them? I have a couple ideas in my head but would like to get some ideas from others on here as well. I know I can buy one but would rather build one in my shop.
Thanks, Rusty

Its alot easier just to buy one the work is already done plus if u build one you dont know if its goin to work right e2 sliders like pretty good havent heard of any gailing ive got a hanson thats awesome. maybe look it the parts section if u dont want to fork out alot just for a driveshaft. jmo

Buy a splined balanced one like Nerat or Wiles. By the time you build a few, they break or break a trans because they are wobbling all over the place you will be better off spending the money on one that has been proven to work.

I would buy one if you really want one.
Splined is the only way to go.
Like stated above, they need to be pretty damn perfect to avoid other part failures.
Sliders are much more heavy and put more stress on driveline parts so if they're bent or unbalanced thats alot of rotational mass wobbling around on the end of your aluminum tranny.

Also agreed on buying one from a proven dealer. I built my own for several years and after a couple shows, I'd brake the tailshaft off the transmission. Upgraded to a proven name, not one issue since.

Obviously if you want to learn how to build something you're in the wrong spot. Sliders are easy, inexpensive, take 2 hrs, don't vibrate you to death and you can be satisfied you made it yourself. Check out derbythis.com, the homemade parts thread.

I have a nerat and I have an e2. Both have been behind the same motor. I can honestly say that either one is a good shaft and there is no difference in performance. One is a little heavier but is balanced also. The other isnt balanced and is a little lighter. The only issue I had with one of them was the universal joint going bad and throwing a cap. At that point your gonna break a trans in half regardless of it being balalnced or not. Fluke, umm yeah. Did the builder go out of his way to make it right, you bet your ass he did. I can honestly say that both Nerat and E2 have some of the best customer service out there!!!!

thank you all for your responses. I am still interested in building one but I can see buying one as well to keep from distroying more transmissions. I broke one tailshaft this year and it really stinks when that happens.

Or buy the ends from nerat and go to tsc and buy a square pto shaft thats long enough to slide and fit your cars

like cheater111 said go by the two ends from nerat and i go to runnings farm and fleet or you can go to tractor supply company and get the 35 series tubes and shaft and 35 series yolks and put it together. i have a guy i know at runnings who gets discount and we make ours for around 320-350 bucks
