I usually use the stock slider section out of the car Im building, if I need to make a new one, 2 aftermarket u-joints, little bit of solid shaft, 2 heims and a detach wheel.
Put one joint at the box, one in between slider and shaft. My preference only on this, one heim at the firewall and one about where the dash bar is.
I mount my wheel wherever is comfortable for my legs.
I also use 2 collars, one at each heim, to keep my shaft from pulling in and out. I also HIGHLY recommend cold rolled shaft or DOM tubing. Not so much for strength but I have ran into problems with my heims and hex piece fitting over the cheap rod.

2nd generation IMO are the best to use, they fit small spline boxes directly .... otherwise I use old iron slider shaft and sweet joints from speedway, much smaller profile.

oh and if I remember correctly, the full size vans have a little longer shaft....
you'll need a 10mm socket to remove the dust boot and move a module I believe, like a 12 or 13mm 12 point socket to remove the bolt by the box and like a 13 mm to remove the column bolt, then a pry bar.... some of them are a bear to get off the box....

do you guys make a setup for each type of car you run or move your steering box from car to car? I might be wrong but aren't old iron gm, 80's ford, and 90's fords all different splines?

Eric has pointed out a problem here that costs many people wins, yet is dismissed on here all of the time. This thread is a perfect example. Simple geometry solves the problem, and some effort. A bottom section that will collapse with an upper section that is locked in place will NEVER change the angle of the joint near the firewall. It is a fixed position because of the mounting of the shaft when installed. Therefore, that joint will bind/break/etc. and you can't steer. If you don't care to steer, great, then why do anything? Just leave it as it is. And if you want to do something to help you win, then do it so you can steer 99.99% of the time. Build the shaft right, mount it properly, and it will likely never come back to your chest. They will come back, but I've got a mound of beer around my mid section and I've never, ever, had one that I couldn't drive to a win because of steering too close. Pictures of a car I built and had my column in that was driven in the trailer after Fall Brawl. Or this one with a properly built column in it. The car is already junk, so you just as well push it for all it is worth to get your money. A factory type column with a lower section that will collapse will not get you here.

Thanks that is the style I was thinking of. These will only fit square body ford boxes though? I have a 96 Lincoln im about to start on and need to build a column. All if my stuff fits metric Cadillac. I almost considered trying to use a cadi steering box

What I was getting at is I seen where someone said the van columns fit small spline square ford boxes, I did not know if the bubble and square ford boxes shared the same shaft size/spline. The Cadillac column came into play when I considered putting the Cadillac box on my bubble Lincoln.

I would suggest going to whatever box you have, pulling a tape on the input shaft, it's going to be something like 5/8, 3/4, 13/16 and taking a pick and counting the splines, then you will know what you're dealing with.

Box and bubble gear boxes are different. the box gear box is 3/4 dia 36 spline. Not sure what the bubble box is.
