Soooooo........I am assuming I have a 10 bolt BIA from my 77 delta 88. Planning on running this rear in my next car. Is it an 8.5" ring gear size?? I actually put a r&p set from a 96 Silverado into right before I ran it last year, but I couldn't get the pinion preloaded right( stayed loose). I can't find this rear end model anywhere on aftermarket sites. All I find is the 8.2" B.O.P. I am going to change to a 4.56 gear this year and just wanna see what I can do about the pinion.(4.56 is out of a late 80's truck). Second thing, can I run shafts from a c-clip axle? Summit Racing acts like I am crazy when I call for axles for this rear axle. I can get the c-clip axles all day. What do I do?
So a buddy of mine asked to borrow a rearend from me to give his(my old car) a final hoorah. Long story short when he got the car it had a buick 10 bolt housing with 31 spline c-clip axles. Came factory like that so gearing was 2.15 or close to that. Now the rearend he borrowed from me was just a plain old 10 bolt I was and going to brace up spline count to 12 bolts and get away from 2:86. Well I told him he was better off with the 31 splines then my ten bolt but he wanted better gearing, I feel the buick 10/12 is stronger then my 10 bolt bia. What are your Thoughts on this situation?
If you were going to run both stock the 31 spline c-clip would be better. That is all I run for axles now. 12 bolt BIA got too expensive because they kept bending. 31 spline c-clips are thicker at the bearing than a BIA as well. C-clip only matters if you break an axle. Personal preference but I would go with the 31 spline. The flanges also don't bend as soon since they do not have the 4 holes in them.

ok alittle confused on this...Do you or don't you have a Bolt in rear?

Yes.....I have a bolt-in-axle rear end. And I have installed a 8.5" gear set from an early 90's truck. But I ran into a problem where I couldn't get all of the "endplay" out of the pinion while attempting to set the preload. While looking around on aftermarket sites, I can't find an 8.5" bolt-in-axle. Only an 8.2". I actually ran the 8.5" gear set last year without any issues, but am about to switch to a 4.56 gear set from another late 80's truck and want to make sure it gets set correctly. I also am looking for replacement shafts and was wondering if I could use the shafts from a late model 8.5" c-clip rear? I don't know what the difference is between the two different axles is as far as length and bearing surface diameter? Will I be able to press the bearing in place on the newer shaft?
you need to change the pinion bearing and race... I have the part number in the garage if you need it... and if you want aftermarket shafts... just box your axle up and send it to moser... that's by far the best way to determine what you have... the c clip axle will not work....
Im looking for any diff internal parts that might be available for my 72 wagon. I cant find parts for this thing anywhere. I could get by with just the spider gears if need be. Its a 10 bolt cover 12 bolt ring gear 30 spline axle. The spiders are in a million pieces. The ring gear measures just a tick under 9" i believe its an 8.75 but have been told that its a 8.875??? My gm rear end knowledge is little at best. Any help would be awesome
Would a 71 Impala with a big block have bolt in axles and if so would they be 10 bolt or 12 bolt?
It could have any of the above. Only way to know is to look at it. There are pictures in the beginning of this thread to aid in your determining what you have.

you have the hybrid 8.875 ring gear.... probably 31 spline c clip axles.... pull the whole thing and swap in a bolt in rearend bud you'll be better off

i've personally never found an impala with a 12 bolt... i think it's happened tho... you probably have a 10 bolt c clip.... some came with bia tho
rear end is a 10 bolt 8.5. the gears have been welded before I got it. axles are BIA best I can tell, I couldn't see a c clip on the axles. I need about a 3.73 gear. what is the best thing to do? also want some decent axles. will the ones in it be fine? its in a 72 impala. not sure if its the original one or not.
