i had one out of a 77 caprice, only one ive ever seen. Even my rearend guy hadnt seen one before. I was so lost when i was gonna weld the spiders up and it didnt have clips. I thought i was crazy at first. I kept it around for years thinking id do something with it, but then realized id never find another axle so i tossed it. Those rears came in 73-77 mid size also. I have 6-8 on the rear pile in the yard. I've also seen those style rears in the early metric full size. The axles are different length if i remember. are these axles only 8.2 ring gears or did they also come with the 8.5 ring gears . i have 3 of these but one cover has a notch in the sides and the other two have a out dent in the top right corner(8.2 im sure) all 3 are bia , all out of 1977 cars

The 70s mid size rears are 7.5" 10 bolts and are 26 spline axles if I remember right. Not the same as the 77-9 BOP full size BIA rears.

Some of the mid size 7.5s are BIA. We've had a few over the years and are 4.75 axle bolt pattern
The metric, full size, BIA rears are 5 on 5 wheel bolt pattern. Came in metric Caddies, Electras and 98s. And yes, are narrower than the old iron rears. I always thought they were 8.5s.
You say you have a full size, metric BIA with 4.75 wheel pattern? Hmmm that leaves Caprice, Delta 88, LeSabre and the metric Ponchos. Never have seen one with BIA but I suppose it's possible???

Then that's not a full size metric rear. It's a 7.5" with 26 spline axles.

The ones I have are 8.5 out if mid size. There are also 8.2s. Never seen a 7.5 in a mid size before 77.

Does anyone know the lengths of 71-76 Cadillac axles? Not the housing, but the actual axle shafts.

I have been running ten bolt bias and 12 bolt bias and hybrids since I started derbying somewhat seriously. Today I encountered something I have not encountered in the previous ten years of use. I pulled a fresh set of 12 bolt bia 31 spline axles, and the bearing races stayed in the housing. It appears that the rubber that held them as a sealed bearing deteriorated over time, or they were not a complete sealed bearing like in the past. I have had caddy axles have some movement but usually the retainer keeps the races from coming all the way off. This is a fresh set of never ran axles, can I just install them with the races the way they came out and run them that way, or will this be a problem?

The factory sealed roller bearings have been replaced with taper style bearings. Yes they work fine with the race staying in the housing.
