The bored out 350 base to 355 helps trueing the bores and increasing cubic inches
383, adds additional bore and stroke, trying the bores and increasing torque numbers.
With that being said, why do all the top engine builders offer the 355, even though they could just as much build a 383 and increase the torque numbers.
Is the machine pricing that much more or is the 355 built that proven?

I'm guessing reliability, less heat build, fuel economy, and ease of finding parts for cheap

Because simply horsepower and torque do not win derbies... Smaller bores take more heat and produce less heat. 355 is bored enough to have some slop in the piston for heat expansion. I'm no major big time derbier but I know having slop in the wrist pin and cylinder wall and keeping coolant in will help you be there at the end... Horse power means absolutely nothing. Run low gears to help make it easier on the engine 355 is cheap that's all there is to it. Coyler builds and sells alot of 383s though

I’d be curious if anyone’s done a track test between two identical built motors all the same parts except ones a 383 and ones a 355 if there’s even a ton of diff between the two on paper yes there should be but real world testing doesn’t always show the same reffering to derby use not street use.

Some people think rod to stroke ratio is very important and others don't. A 6" rod on a 3.48" stroke would be substantially different than a 5.7" rod on a 3.75".

A 355 is just a rebuilt 350. It requires less work and additional parts compared to building a 383.
