I’m not sure if I am posting this in the right spot but if not point me in the right direction. I am currently running a late 80s Vic built to “limited weld” rules. Pretty much stock ford 302 except intake swap for carb setup and very basic work done to engine. (Timing chain, new gaskets, just basic stuff) I am running 8.8 rear but do have a ford 9inch to put under it with gears in mid 3.5s. I do have a Chevy truck with 283 motor and matching trans. Question is should I put time and money into swapping from ford 302 to this 283? No matter what I do I am for sure putting this 9inch under the car, last derby I just didn’t seem to have the power these guys had.

You don’t have the torque needed for 3.55s with that motor. Race guys sell the center sections all the time. Or the ring and pinion. Put money there first, stall in trans next.

Yeah I’m definitely gonna put the 9inch under it and get a new set of gears. I’ve heard start with your gears first. I’ve only ran three very short runs cause I just can’t keep up so I’m picking up as I go. I just didn’t know if once I did that, if I should keep running this 302 or just swap it out for this 283 I’ve got. Thanks for the response

302’s are very underrated they just don’t have the aftermarket avalibility like a sbc and after 85 it should be a roller, I’d just leave it and swap the rear and gears. If your going to put time and money in to a motor tho deff go with the 283.

Dads got a 289 around that’s fully rebuilt and a little hotter than stock in case it’s an engine make to body make show. 289/302 with gears in a Vic be just fine. Kept a 460 for the same purpose but more if we ran the show again pissed lmao.
