Well I have been thinking a lot and being a cheap SOB I am tired of smashing and popping radiators. I have seen radiator barrels on top of cars before but we are not allowed them. I am thinking about just removing the fan and putting a big water tank in instead of the radiator. I am not sure how many gallons it would hold but lets say I do it with the same width and height of a impala radiator, 33x19 and around 4-6 inches thick. Do you think it would keep the motor cool enough? Probably not but I am curious how it would do.

i was thinking about it but never have seen derby that would let me. i would personaly use a 55 gallon drum filled with ice water. inside the car maybe for shotr heats just have no return and have it unceremouosly dump the water out out the bottom hose on the pump

I can't do a barrel so I was thinking about trying this. It has to be a radiator in a stock position, but doesn't say anything about being factory etc.

we did this for couple years. Back in the day....haha
Roughly the dimensions you said. Must be vented to atmosphere or have a inline radiator cap on the top hose. We tried pressure relief valves on the vent line but would plug or stick with the heat and blow the hoses off. The last couple i ran just vented off with no resistance. Would steam but hot water is better then no water. I think total would hold 9 gallons or so of water. We did a couple where we drilled inch and half holes through and welded pipe to help with surface area cooling but never noticed a difference. Make sure and weld couple beads on the hose connections to give clamp something to grab and weld them good and don't use too thin of material. Mine would be bulged out after couple hot runs from the pressure. With that said these are sometimes a ticking time bomb... 3/8 steel was the norm think buddy did a couple 1/2.

What ever you do don’t forget a pressure relief valve. And above all else having a pressure gauge is the difference between between a carefully tuned machine and a pipe bomb

I've seen a few cars run those. They seemed to only be good for 20 minutes before getting hot. Have no personal experience though.

Same as cheezwhiz being from the same area we ran the same style I filled it with 20pounds of ice then water the best I could when tied into the core support spacers its it's a great deal for a 15 or 20 min deal really helps core support listen to the cheeze the man knows his stuff

Much of the same, with the slugs though welded in I did find that it helped keep the barrel from expanding as much. Rules outlawed them around here as well, but since I have learned radiators can cool better for even a moderate amount of time on track. Just to add some info, once a barrel gets hot, it's hot. No amount of your fan spinning is going to help actively cool it. A radiator has the ability to pull air through it, meaning you can cool the water as you run with the fan. Depending on your time on track depends if it is worth it. To mirror what the other guys say, about 20 minutes packed with ice was about the time it would take to get hot. Then all night to cool down lol

Punisher 66J do you run stock radiators? I had wasted alot of factory one. Aluminum ones take a beating. I'm going 5 years the same radiator and I only run nose out. Now if you want to make radiator I'd be making my own aluminum ones.
