I find it hard to believe that GM would make a whole new cast to make a "diamond" frame just to be thicker. MI could see it as a mark to show that a old casting was used to make that frame so its dimensions may be ever so slightly off.

Hard to say, I know frame thicknesses vary wildly through gm in the 70’s, I imagine the diamond being just like the HD on a vic as far as die’s go and how well they hold up compared to normal frames

yes, both sides are slightly thicker metal. The "diamond" is actually a triangle. It's found near the horns. The same question comes of "antibelly" bars. Some cars yes, some no.
I'm curious as to why it came to be? Maybe experimenting crash testing?
