Ive built a few, the pointy replica I do, and all the others I guess, have 15 upright gussets, and one horizontal gusset. Plus the outside shell. All 3/8". They are incredibly hard on cars. That being said, I have not had one of mine bend besides the fronts denting. Are they worth the money, I guess thats in the eye of the builder. Mine sells for like $650 welded, thats with no skin (locally they are starting to allow replica bumpers with no skin). Stock pointy is 350-400. Is it worth the extra $250 to have something last 20 runs over 2-3, in my opinion it is.

So there is a lot to it. I know several of the different builders personally and as far as fabricated replica bumpers go whether it be a replica New Yorker or 74 or 76 I personally like them. Way better than stock ones loaded and yes they last a long time. Circle Z/HAM is my choice for all bumpers because Kelby (the owner) does a great job for a good price campared to other prices. I know his pointy main body is 1/2 with 3/8’s gussets all T1 I believe. $700 for replica bumpers except a flat back 74 which is $750 compared to the curved back for $700. I’m not sure he advertises it but he will replace a bumper if you do bend it. I’ve seen ski’s 74 replicas break. Gage Sumners amish built pointies are good as well but I’m not the type to spend $1200 on a bumper. Both Gage and Kelby make their pointies to either true size or smaller size to fit a skin. Gage’s bumper will fit both a front and back skin and kelby’s fits just a front. Gage sells a kit to weld together yourself but I am not sure if Kelby does. We will have a Circle Z pointy, a Amish Build Pointy, a ski manufactured bumper (not a replica), and a New Yorker with a NLR insert so we’ll see what happens. I wish gages pointies were 1200 when i bought mine it was 1350 with core 1700 without now there 1450 with core 1800 without trust me i bought a second one.

Maybe $1200 was for an unwelded one, I was talking to him during a heat at blizzard so there very likely could have been some miscommunication

That is insane to me but I don't have that kind of cash. I will have less than 2000 in my imperial when I run it in july. I have never had more than 1500 in an entire car before. If they allow bumpers like this to run they might as well allow 6x6 square tubing stuffed and welded straight to the front of cars, there is no difference.

I personally don't understand all these 500lb hard azz...heavy...replica bumpers going on all these cars lately. I can understand a full weld outlaw car/truck or maybe even like a blizzard bash build but for years its all been about correct bumper choice for your car. Alot of newbies automatically think that they need to go get the biggest baddest bumper out there and throw on a car and as we all know that's a huge mistake. As we all know bumper selection for a certain car is key as far as the bumper holding its own but yet still being forgiving enough to help keep the nose down as long as possible but it seems like every derby i go to nowadays more and more guys are just throwing big thick heavy homemade bumpers on everything. Yea...i understand that they cut down bumper buying/building etc and that they may not bend and last a long time etc but what good is it if it junks your car twice as fast or worse.

I probably wouldn’t want to use one on a limited weld build, depending on car. There’s a lot of unplated frame taking all the stress from that bumper...

ORIGINALLY ,PROMOTERS ALLOWED HOME MADE OR SQUARE TUBE- FACTORY SKIN COVERED BUMPERS AS THE DRIVERS CRIED ' WE CANT FIND AFFORDABLE ORIGINAL BUMPERS'....... SOOOOO, PROMOTERS CAVED IN AND DEC STARTED SELLING THEIRS, AND OTHERS STARTED SELLING CRUDELY MADE ONES FOR THE $200 TO $300 RANGE..... NOW, TRUST ME I DONT HAVE ANY ISSUE FINDING GOOD BUMPERS.I SEE THEM ADVERTISED ON HERE AND ELSEWHERE FOR REASONABLE COSTS..... SOME SELLERS EVEN SHIP THEM....... AND I CERTAINLY CAN MAKE MY OWN IF I WANTED TO.... BUT THE ORGININAL IDEA OF ALLOWING HOMEMADE BUMPERS WAS TO BE A CHEAPER ALTERNATIVE TO A $300 DOLLAR 74 IMPALA FRONT... IT SEEMS THAT HAS BEEN LOST ALONG THE WAY...... BUYING A BUILT BUMPER FOR $700 TO $1500 DOESNT SEEM LIKE A CHEAPER ROAD TO ME..... 6X6 3/8 BOX TUBE DOESNT COST THAT MUCH... AND CERTAINLY NOT EVEN $300 BUCKS FOR A 6 FOOT LENGTH... JUST REMEMBER, FOR EVERY PIECE OF UNBENDABLE THAT IS PUT IN PLACE, SOMETHING ELSE WILL BEND BEHIND IT... IF ALL FRONT BUMPERS WERE THE SAME,THE SPENDING OF A GRAND MORE WONT MATTER..... EVERY CAR WILL HAVE THE SAME STRENGTH IF BUILT WITH COMPARABLE PIECES.... WHY SPEND SO MUCH MORE FOR NO GAIN OVER THE NEXT GUY..... GET BACK TO STOCK BUMPERS.... SAVE MONEY . THAT WAS THE GOAL IN THE FIRST PLACE........RANT OVER..

I like the homemade bumper rules because of the cost factor. I've built a couple of homemade bumpers out of 4x4" 1/4 wall into roughly the same height and point as a 74 Impala and had less than $100 in them and they work just fine on bone stock and limited welds. If the stock bumper rules came back the bumper prices would skyrocket back up into unaffordable again.

Jon’s point is that homemade bumpers did skyrocket and therefore defeat the entire purpose of homemade bumpers......

I get his point, but the fact is that you dont "have" to spend 1200 on a bumper because you can spend significantly less on material than the average price of an Impala or pointy and then just build your own. The 1-2k bumpers are nice but the dont give you an advantage over someone with a well built "homemade" one. When stuck with the stock bumpers only rule there are alot of guys who will have trouble coming up with good bumpers for a good price.

Wow.... I had no idea that replica bumpers were a thing other than the original DEC bumper... excuse my French... but that kind of money for a bumper is absurd....
