Anyone have a failure like this. Motor was running great, zero issues. Then it died with no warning. Wouldnt even try to restart. I left the ignition on and about 10 minutes later the distributor cap started pouring a huge amount of smoke out of it. Got the car home slapped a new cap on and it fires right up.

I've also never seen that. I'm guessing something got knocked loose and had an internal short but dang that's ugly.

Figures that the only motor without points would melt down the distributor. Guess it's time to find a points distributor for an olds small block.

I thought you said you installed a new cap and coil and it ran?

Yes. New (used) cap I had laying around and she fired right up and ran with no problems. I prefer points but I've never gotten around to getting a points distributor for this olds motor.

I honestly dont know, this is a 77 olds 403 that was intended to be a throw away motor a couple years ago, but the thing is insanely reliable so I decided to experiment and throw it in a caddy.

Yea you never hear much about guys running Olds motors in derbys but i have ran 2 Olds 350s in metric caddys as a bolt in replacement for the 425s and they both got hot hot after losing the radiators but never gave me an issue. I would not hesitate to run another.

If it's running now, just save your time and money and run it like it is and send it. No reason to invest in points on that motor. JMO

I realize most people dislike Olds, especially the 403, but this motor has done nothing but impress me. It was originally in a bonestock I slapped together in a weekend, then spent a year running a tuff truck circuit. Then I let a buddy borrow it and it has just been a solid reliable engine. So next time I'm at a junkyard that has some old stuff I'll yank a distributor for $20.
I like having a BOP engine so I can use the much more plentiful BOP th400s.

There was a guy that ran olds motors in race cars because no one would claim it

There is a guy around here that has been running a 70 model olds 455 for around 20 years and he loves that thing. I wouldnt necessarily recommend the 403 to anyone, but I've tried killing it for a couple years on purpose because it's hard for me to send a running motor to the crusher, but so far the thing has never missed a lick minus this coil issue.
