What are the big differences between the 741, 742, and 489 casings? I'm looking to jig one for Vic's but I'm not sure what to go with. Have a 741 and a 489.

741,742,489 differences are the size of the pinion diameter. Besided that they would all go in the same way in the vic. Theres more specific info in the mopar rear ends thread.

Not a mopar guy at all so bear with me on this, but are the case numbers an actual measurement or just a specific casting number that corolates to a specific size?

seriously...This is explained in n8's above posted link
however...
only serious difference is pinion stem diameter case numbers have nothing do do with dimensions, its a 50-50 chance that the casting number on any given 8 3/4 will actually display the numbers 741,742,or 489 other means are usually needed to identify cases.
741- 1 3/8" pinion stem diameter 742- 1 3/4" pinion stem diameter 489- 1 7/8" pinion stem diameter

Arguable on 489 being the strongest. It has the thickest pinion stem, but since it uses a crush sleeve instead of a solid spacer on the pinion like the 742, it does give up some strength there. They are both durable in my experience.
