Count the splines and measure the pinion, your 8.5 yoke might fit.
They used the same yoke on a lot of stuff.

8.2 is the Axle used mainly in late 60s early 70s midsize muscle cars. They went to 8.5 in early 70s.

Far as I know 8.5 won't fit it, I tried once. I ended up having to just use a stock driveshaft and the strap style yoke.
Far as I know no one makes a bolt on yoke for it. You would be way ahead to ditch it for an 8.5 10 bolt.

Yes you can weld a plate on it. Try to get the yoke a flat cut when u cut it. I got two on rearends an works very well.

If you have ever ran a bolt on slider yoke before nerat stated machining them, they were 2 yokes tig welded together. Could buy them right from derby parts.com
Personally I would just swap rearends for one with the correct yoke. A 2 piece homemade one. will have more potential to fail than a machined one piece one that has been proven and tested.
It to mention you will be getting a stronger center section. For 200 it would be worth it.
